Dogs have long performed very important missions in armies, often related to security.

There are dogs that also carry out search and rescue operations, and in some cases these four-legged friends have the mission of raising the morale of those who serve in the Armed Forces, people who are often immersed in stressful situations far from their homes, as happens to the participants in the Pitch Black 25 exercise, including a group of aviators from the Spanish Air Force.

Connie works for the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) at its Darwin Air Base in the Northern Territory. Like other members of the RAAF, Connie wears a blue-toned GPU camouflage uniform, but unlike the rest of the Australian military personnel, Connie walks on all fours.

Connie is in the care of Chaplain Darren Loechel, of the Australian Military Christian Fellowship. This dog's role is not to search for explosives or rescue lost people, but to provide emotional support. It is a social assistance dog working with the RAAF and brings some relief to the airmen who work there.

Yesterday, the Spanish Air Force announced that on Tuesday, August 4, the Spanish Expeditionary Air Group in Australia received a visit from Connie, stating: "Originally trained as a guide dog, Connie found her calling supporting defense personnel at RAAF Base Darwin. During Exercise Pitch Black, her calm and friendly nature has helped build connections that extend beyond uniforms and national borders, demonstrating that sometimes the simplest gestures can make the greatest contribution to teamwork, well-being, and international partnership."

The RAAF has today published a report on this dog's visit to the Spanish airmen. "Not every hero at Exercise Pitch Black takes to the skies. For many personnel participating in RAAF’s premier international air combat exercise, one of the most memorable ambassadors of partnership has been Connie, the welfare dog." In this exercise, Connie's role has been to offer "moments of comfort and connection for personnel from the 21 participating nations".

The RAAF has highlighted that Connie has played a vital role in supporting the well-being of personnel during this exercise, enabling people to disconnect from their duties for a moment, relax and connect with one another.

The Royal Australian Air Force has highlighted the case of a member of an international delegation who initially seemed reserved, but after spending time with Connie, opened up and shared stories about his own dog waiting for him at home.

In their account of this visit, the RAAF included these words from Spanish Sergeant Álvaro Delgado, regarding Connie's presence and the comfort it provided them far from home: "Dogs are a unique and great experience. Sometimes, dogs know more than everyone else, they can see a need."

In Australia, there is a symbol, the Purple Poppy, that recognizes the loyalty and bravery of all animals serving in the armed forces in times of war and peace. These animals not only help active-duty soldiers, but also veterans who have returned home and who often suffer trauma due to the harsh experiences they endured during their service.

Furthermore, in that country there is an organization, the Australian War Animal Memorial Organisation (AWAMO), dedicated to recognizing the service, loyalty, and sacrifices of animals that have served alongside humans in military and peacekeeping operations. This organization currently sponsors 30 dogs whose role is to support veterans.
