During World War II, Nazi Germany initially relied on light tanks such as the Panzer I and Panzer II, and later on medium tanks such as the Panzer III and Panzer IV. But as time went on, German tanks increased in weight in order to become invulnerable to enemy fire, an objective largely achieved by two heavy tanks: the Panzer VI Tiger and the Königstiger.

The Third Reich's obsession with tank size led to a truly insane project: the Panzer VIII Maus, an enormous beast of which only two prototypes were built, only one of which survives today. The name Maus (Mouse) was an ironic nickname given by the Germans to this tank to mislead the Allies about its true capabilities. The initial requirement, issued in March 1942, called for a tank weighing over 100 tons.

Developed by the automotive companies Porsche and Skoda and the German gun manufacturer Krupp, the Maus was an enormous 188-ton tank with a 55-ton turret (weighing more than many tanks of that war). It was 10 meters long, 3.67 meters wide, and 3.63 meters high. Designed for a crew of six, Hitler considered it a decisive weapon on the battlefield. The Maus was armed with a 128 mm KwK 44 L/55 main gun and a coaxial 75 mm KwK 44 L/36.5 gun. Its engine produced 1,750 hp, and its top speed was 20 km/h, with a range of 160 km.

Had it been mass-produced, the Maus would have been a logistical nightmare for the German Army. Besides its enormous cost, which would have left a considerable logistical footprint, it was so heavy that it would have been unable to use almost any bridge of the time. Its road fuel consumption was between 1,625 and 1,680 liters per 100 kilometers, with even higher figures off-road. Furthermore, it presented a considerable target for enemy aircraft and artillery.
