Russia continues its strategy of committing war crimes against the Ukrainian civilian population, including children and babies.
On Friday, August 21, at 7:32 p.m. CET, the State Emergency Service (DSNS) of Ukraine reported that four people, including three children, were murdered in a Russian drone strike, and one person was injured. The attack took place in the village of Tokarivka, in the community of Veselinivska, region of Mykolaiv, and caused a fire in a building housing a shop and post office with a total area of 300 square meters. The DSNS released this photo of the three children murdered, covered with a blanket:
Ivan Vyhivskyi, Ukraine's Minister of Internal Affairs, has stated that two of the children murdered were 11 years old and the third was 12. According to the website Children of War, which compiles data from the Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine, between February 24, 2022, the day the large-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine began, and August 23, 2026, Russian invaders have already killed 734 Ukrainian children and injured 2,795. Among the war crimes committed by the invaders against Ukrainian children are 20,610 deported children and 23 children who have suffered sexual assault by the invaders.
What is most astonishing is that these murders barely warrant the attention of many media outlets. Nor are there any protests about them. Some governments don't even mention these crimes. I am writing this from Spain, and Pedro Sánchez's government has not issued any statement condemning this crime against three Ukrainian children. In fact, the Spanish government rarely publishes statements condemning the frequent Russian attacks against Ukrainian civilians, perhaps so as not to upset its pro-Russian far-left partners.
However, on Friday, the Sánchez government did "strongly" condemn the Israeli settlements in Judea and Samaria, a stunning double standard between the criminal actions of a dictatorship like Russia against another country and the actions of a democratic country like Israel. Would we see this outrageous silence if those Russian crimes against children were committed by Israel?
