The more than 700 tanks donated to Ukraine by other countries: their numbers and models

NATO members and other like-minded countries have carried out an unprecedented mobilization of their military resources to help Ukraine defend itself.

About to be one year after the Russian invasion, we are going to review the tanks that the allied countries have delivered to Ukraine, as well as their quantities, taking as reference the data published by the Independent website Oryxspioenkop.com (which are not very complete) and from other sources. Deliveries are shown by country, ordered according to the number of tanks donated. Regarding the data from Oryxspioenkop.com, it must be said that the Leopard 2 that he attributes to Denmark and the Netherlands will not finally be sent, as was learned last week. In total, deliveries already made and those still confirmed for delivery amount to more than 746 tanks to date.

🇵🇱 Poland: more than 334 tanks

It is the country that has donated the most tanks to Ukraine, by far. Let's look at the types and amounts:

• More than 290 T-72M(R) and T-72M1(R). Prior to these deliveries, Poland had 120 T-72s in service and another 470 in storage, according to Military Today.
• 30 PT-91 Twardy. It is a modernized Polish version of the T-72. Poland had 232 PT-91s prior to these donations..
• 14 Leopard 2A4. Prior to these donations, Poland had 142 active Leopard 2A4s, which are in the process of being modernized to the Leopard 2PL version..

🇩🇪 Germany: 118 tanks

Germany is one of the largest contributors to the multinational plan to ship modern tanks to Ukraine. In addition, an initiative is underway to ship stored tanks as well. The models and quantities are as follows:

• 18 Leopard 2A6. Delivery was announced on February 1. Germany has 312 Leopard 2A6s and Leopard 2A7s, 104 of them in the process of being upgraded to the Leopard 2A7V version. / UPDATED 2/24/2023 19:27: Germany adds 4 tanks Leopard 2A6 more, until reaching 18.
• 100 Leopard 1A5. This model is no longer in active use in the German Army. These are stored models. They will be supplied directly by German industry, according to an announcement made on February 7th. Denmark and the Netherlands will contribute to this delivery.

🇨🇿 Czech Republic: 107 tanks

Despite having a small armed forces, the Czech Republic is by far the country that has sent the most tanks to Ukraine in proportion to its resources. The deliveries already made and those that will be carried out throughout 2023 involve the delivery of all its T-72s to the Ukrainian Army. The models are the following:

• 35 T-71M1. Sent in April 2022, according to Oryxspioenkop.com. These are tanks that the Czech Army had in storage. Germany has contributed to this delivery by donating 15 Leopard 2A4s to Ukraine as compensation.
• 56 T-72EA Avenger. It is a modernized Czech version of the T-72. The shipment has been co-financed by the United States and the Netherlands. 11 of them were part of the stock of the Czech company Excalibur Army.
• 16 T-72M1 and T-55 refurbished. They were part of the stock of the Czech company Excalibur Army.

🇳🇱 Netherlands: 45 tanks

As I pointed out at the beginning of the post, the Netherlands was one of the countries that raised the possible delivery of Leopard 2 to Ukraine, but in the end it has been ruled out. This country contributes to finance the delivery of 100 Leopard 1A5s announced by Germany. In addition, the following must be added:

• 45 T-72EA Avenger. It is a modernized Czech version of the T-72. The shipment has been co-financed by the United States and the Netherlands. 11 of them were part of the stock of the Czech company Excalibur Army.

🇺🇸 United States: 31 tanks

The United States is one of the countries that has donated the most military material to Ukraine, including missile launchers, artillery, armored vehicles, etc. Regarding the tanks, at the moment only one pending delivery is known:

• 31 M1 Abrams. The US Army has more than 2,500 tanks of this type in active service. The delivery of those 31 was announced at the end of January, as the US contribution to the plan of several NATO countries to deliver more advanced tanks to Ukraine. The US is the country that contributes the most tanks in this multinational project.

🇸🇮 Slovenia: 28 tanks

Despite being a small country with a very modest armed forces, Slovenia has also contributed to tank deliveries to Ukraine:

• 28 M-55S. It is a modernized version of the Soviet T-55. The announcement of their delivery to Ukraine was made in September 2022. The Slovenian Army had 30 M-55S. Of the two remaining tanks, one has been sent to a museum and the other was sold to Bangladesh.

🇲🇦 Morocco: 20 tanks

Morocco has been the only African country that has sent tanks to Ukraine to help its defense. Here's what's known about shipping:

• 20 T-72B. These are tanks modernized in the Czech Republic by the company Excalibur Army with funds from the US and the Netherlands, as announced Menadefense.net on January 22. The Royal Moroccan Army had 148 T-72s (136 T-72B and 12 T-72BK), purchased from the Belarusian Army in 1999 and 2000.

🇬🇧 United Kingdom: 14 tanks

The United Kingdom is also among the countries that have donated the most military equipment to Ukraine. In mid-January, the British government was among the first to join the multinational plan to send more modern tanks to Ukraine, specifically the following:

• 14 Challenger 2. The British government announced this shipment on January 15th. The British Army has 227 tanks of this type in service.

🇪🇸 Spain: 10 tanks

Spain is one of the NATO countries that has contributed the least heavy material to Ukraine in proportion to its resources. Likewise, it is one of the few countries that have joined the multinational plan to deliver modern tanks to Ukraine. These are the data:

• 10 Leopard 2A4. The initial number of 6 tanks was confirmed on February 22 by the government agency Efe. On February 23, Pedro Sánchez announced that there will be 10 tanks. These tanks come from a batch of 53 that are stored in Zaragoza. A month ago the Spanish government leaked the shipment of 20 tanks to a related newspaper, but finally that number has been cut in half. The Spanish Army has 108 Leopard 2A4 (53 of them in storage) and 219 Leopardo 2E, a Spanish version equivalent to the Leopard 2A6.

🇸🇪 Sweden: 10 tanks

Sweden has also joined the multinational plan for deliveries of modern tanks to Ukraine. These are the data:

• 10 Stridsvagn 122. This is the Swedish version of the Leopard 2A5. Sweden bought 120 tanks of this type. The announcement of the delivery was made on February 24, 2023.

🇳🇴 Norway: 8 tanks

Norway is one of the countries that have joined the multinational plan to send modern tanks to Ukraine. These are the data:

• 8 Leopard 2A4NO. The announcement of this shipment was made on February 14th. Currently, this country only has 36 such tanks. Earlier this month, Norway announced the purchase of 54 Leopard 2A7s to replace them.

🇲🇰 North Macedonia: 8 tanks

This small country has also contributed to sending tanks to Ukraine for its defense. These are the data:

• 8 T-72A. The shipment of from 2022. The North Macedonian Army had only 31 tanks of this type.

🇨🇦 Canada: 4 tanks

Despite its remoteness from Ukraine, Canada has been a major contributor to shipments of military hardware to Ukraine. It has also joined the multinational plan to send modern tanks:

• 4 Leopard 2A4. The announcement if it was sent on January 26th. The Canadian Army has 42 Leopard 2A4s, 20 Leopard 2A4M CAN modernized and 20 Leopard 2A6Ms.

🇫🇮 Finland: 6 tanks

Although not yet a NATO member country, Finland has provided a lot of military aid to Ukraine. It has also joined the international coalition to deliver modern tanks to the Ukrainian Army:

• 3 Leopard 2A4. Finland announced the shipment of 3 tanks on February 23, and a month later announced sending three more. The tanks will include demining equipment. Finland has 139 Leopard 2A4s and 100 Leopard 2A6s.

🇵🇹 Portugal: 3 tanls

Despite being the last country on this list, it must be said that Portugal is making a very notable contribution to shipments of military material to Ukraine in proportion to its modest resources. Data on its shipment of tanks are as follows:

• 3 Leopard 2A6. Portugal is the only country, along with Germany, that is going to send copies of this version of the Leopard 2, one of the most modern. The announcement of its shipment was made on February 8. The delivery of these three tanks has a special merit, since Portugal only has 37 tanks, all of the aforementioned model.
