Senator and presidential candidate Miguel Uribe Turbay has been the victim of a serious attack.

A shooting while Uribe was speaking at a public event

The attack occurred as the Centro Democrático senator was speaking at a public event in Fontibón, Bogotá, at around 5:00 p.m. local time. "Armed individuals shot him in the back," the Centro Democrático party said in a statement. Uribe was rushed to the Colombia Clinic, according to WRadio. According to the newspaper El Tiempo, the shooter has already been arrested. The Centro Democrático party has stated:

"We strongly condemn this attack, which not only endangers the life of a political leader but also undermines democracy and freedom in Colombia. We express our solidarity with his wife, Claudia, his son, his family, and his team. We offer our prayers for his speedy recovery and ask all Colombians to join us in praying for him. We urgently call on the authorities to clarify the facts and bring those responsible for this serious attack to justice. Democracy and peace in Colombia must prevail. We hope that justice will be done and that the safety of all political leaders and citizens will be guaranteed.".

Álvaro Uribe: “They attacked a hope of the Homeland”

Former Colombian President Álvaro Uribe has published a message in which he states:

"They attacked a hope for the country, a great husband, father, son, brother, a great colleague. We pray to God for Miguel's recovery. We place our trust in the doctors, the Armed Forces, and the Justice system. We appeal to public reflection."

Gustavo Petro's strange message in which he does not condemn the attack

Following the attack, Gustavo Petro published a strange message on Twitter in which he did not expressly condemn the attack, but expressed his solidarity with the Uribe family, stating the following:

"Oh!" Colombia and its eternal violence. They want to kill the son of an Arab woman in Bogotá, whom they had already murdered, and one should not kill in the heart of the world. They are killing the son and the mother.

Respect life, that is the red line. Colombia should not kill its children, because they are also our children. Mafias of the land, scum of humanity. May the Arab families who arrived in Colombia live in peace.

Colombia welcomes the world and does not kill those who come from all corners of the planet. My solidarity with the Uribe family and the Turbay family. I don't know how to ease their pain. It is the pain of a lost mother and homeland".

A crime amidst the authoritarian drift of the ultra-leftist Petro

This attack took place amid a serious institutional crisis caused by Gustavo Petro due to his confrontation with the Colombian Congress. Recall that in 2024, Petro threatened to form a "constituent assembly" to liquidate Congress, following in the footsteps of Venezuela's socialist dictatorship, a move that has met with strong opposition in Colombia. Currently, Petro's supporters are in the minority in Congress. Let us remember that in 2023 it was discovered that Petro's campaign for the presidential elections received money from drug trafficking.

Hours before the attack, Uribe accused Petro of “destroying” democracy

A few hours before the attack, Miguel Uribe had posted a message on Twitter stating:

"It's unacceptable that Gustavo Petro continues to pressure Congress, insists on his desire to ignore the separation of powers, and lies to the country about the decision of a judge who has NOT ordered a repeat vote.

We already defeated him in his first populist referendum; this week we will vote in the second, and we will do everything possible to defeat it as well."

Along with this message, Uribe published this video in which he accused Petro of "destroying the rule of law, democracy and the Constitution."

+ UPDATED 3:31 AM: At 3:02 AM CET, Colombian journalist Felipe Quintero posted this video stating: "This is the hitman who shot Miguel Uribe. He is fleeing from authorities with a leg wound, while being pursued by authorities and later captured. Miguel Uribe is currently being transferred to the Santafe Foundation."
