A vote on the inclusion of abortion as a fundamental right in the EU

The contrast between being called 'fervently pro-life' and a vote on December 19, 2024

Como sabéis, en los 21 años de este blog, la defensa del derecho a la vida frente al aborto viene siendo un principio irrenunciable.

The disappointing position of PfE and ECR MEPs on pro-abortion report
France: the definitive betrayal of Marine Le Pen and her party to the defense of life

That's why I'm writing this short article, after seeing a video in which Spanish MEP Alvise Pérez declares himself "a fervent pro-lifer." A statement that has been praised by pro-life advocates whom I respect. I'm very glad that Alvise makes statements like that, but there are certain things that, as a pro-lifer, I'm unable to forget, especially when they come from a politician or a party, particularly when they're trying to regain the trust of pro-life voters.

One of those things happened on December 19, 2024. Alvise Pérez and the other two MEPs from his electoral group "Se acabó la fiesta" (SALF, "The Party's Over"), Nora Junco García and Diego Solier, had just completed six months as members of the European Parliament. The day before, Alvise Pérez published a video in which he appeared alongside Nora Junco and Diego Solier announcing SALF's inclusion in the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) parliamentary group. Significantly, in that video Alvise forgot to mention that he had been left out of the group, which only admitted the other two SALF MEPs, as he was being investigated by the National Court for alleged electoral offenses and illegal financing of political parties.

The day after that video was published, the European Parliament voted on a report presented by the Spanish socialist Lina Gálvez Muñoz. One of the most relevant and scandalous aspects of that report appeared in its point 1 an: "The inclusion of the right to abortion in the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union." The results of the vote on item 1 an can be viewed by clicking here. As I mentioned a few days later in an article published on this blog, SALF MEPs Sara Junco and Diego Solier voted in favor of that point, and Alvise Pérez did not vote. That point was approved with 319 votes in favor, 183 against, and 45 abstentions. The Spanish MEPs who voted against that point were those from the PP and Vox.

I've been checking Alvise Pérez's Twitter account and the SALF leader offered no explanation for what happened, why, immediately after being admitted to the ECR parliamentary group, his two colleagues voted in favor of including abortion as a fundamental right in the EU. It could have been a mistake, but Alvise didn't explain it. Furthermore, I've been searching high and low on Google and I don't see that anyone else published this information, despite it being public, so no one asked the SALF leader for an explanation. No one.

A few months later, Junco and Solier ended up breaking with Alvise Pérez, but not because of the abortion issue. Rather, it was because they voted in favor of the European Union's Rearmament Plan, which displeased the SALF leader. That abortion wasn't particularly relevant to SALF and its leader is not surprising. The word "aborto" (abortion) has not appeared even once on SALF's Twitter account nor on Alvise Pérez's, which is certainly odd for someone who now declares himself "fervently pro-life." I know all this will matter very little to SALF's most enthusiastic voters. If there's one thing I've learned about political parties, it's that their most ardent fans are capable of ignoring and forgetting whatever is necessary. Not me.
