Last week, the European Parliament voted on a report with recommendations for the United Nations regarding women.
The report included a clearly pro-abortion point
The rapporteur for the original text (read here) was the Spanish socialist Lina Gálvez Muñoz. Point 1 an of the report supported "including the right to abortion in the EU Fundamental Rights Charter", that is, that the act of killing an innocent and defenseless human being in the maternal womb be considered a "fundamental right" by the European Union. Something aberrant.
The vote took place on Thursday 19 December. The voting page for that day can be viewed here. The results of the vote on point 1 an can be viewed by clicking here. That point was approved with 319 votes in favour, 183 against and 45 abstentions.
33 PfE MEPs and 5 ECR MEPs voted in favour of this point
There are a few striking things in the section of votes in favour. The biggest of all is that 33 MEPs from Patriots for Europe (PfE) voted in favour of promoting abortion as a fundamental right. Among those 33 are the 30 MEPs from Rassemblement National (Marine Le Pen’s party, including its current president, Jordan Bardella), Czech MEPs Filip Turek and Nikola Bartůšek (from the Přísaha party) and Czech MEP Ondřej Knotek (from the ANO party).
On the other hand, five MEPs from the Conservative and Reformist Group (ECR) also supported this pro-abortion point. They were Latvian Reinis Pozņaks, from Apvienotais Saraksts (AS); Bulgarian Ivaylo Valchev (from Ima Takav Narod, ITN); Czech Alexandr Vondra (from the Civic Democratic Party); and two Spanish MEPs, Nora Junco García and Diego Solier (from Se Acabó La Fiesta, SALF).
The vast majority of PfE and ECR MEPs voted against this pro-abortion point, including the Spanish MEPs from Vox (PfE). Curiously, the third MEP and SALF leader, Alvise Pérez (who is among the non-aligned MEPs, since he has not been admitted to the ECR) did not take part in this vote.
Le Pen and the majority of her deputies supported including abortion in the French Constitution
Unfortunately, the position of Rassemblement National is nothing new. In February, Marine Le Pen and the vast majority of her MPs voted in favour of including abortion in the French Constitution, agreeing in their position with Macron's party, with the left and with the far left. Let us remember that the PfE manifesto defends "human dignity". How does this fit in with supporting abortion in the vote on a report in Brussels?
The incomprehensible position of two SALF members just after joining the ECR
On the other hand, six months ago Alvise Pérez declared himself to be "absolutely pro-life" in an interview in El Español (point 38:06 of the video). However, the other two MEPs from his electoral group, SALF, have only just been admitted to the ECR a few days ago and the first thing they do is support a pro-abortion initiative.
One of the most important debates of our time
I repeat what I have said before: the defense of life against abortion is one of the most important debates of our time. If there are patriots or conservatives who claim to be against the ideological dogmas of the left but end up supporting this atrocity, what hope do we have that they will not end up assuming the rest of the dogmas of the left as well? It is precisely at this point that the authenticity of conservative politicians is put to the test. If they fail on this point, we cannot expect them to be consistent on other issues.
