They were the last words of a Ukrainian prisoner murdered by the Russians

Slava Ukraini! Russian terrorism in Ukraine turns two words into a warcry of heroes

Wars, like all national crises, serve to expose the moral quality of a people. Some cover themselves with glory, and others cover themselves with dishonor.

One year of Russian terrorism in Ukraine: more than 9,600 civilians killed, including 461 children
Patriotism and the Russian invasion: Do you ask of Ukraine what you would not accept for your country?

Yesterday the world was able to witness another scene of the terror that Russia has unleashed on the Ukrainian people. Russian soldiers cold-bloodedly murdered a Ukrainian prisoner of war, whose last words were "Slava Ukraini" (Glory to Ukraine), while he watched his executioners smoking a cigarette. The video of this war crime has gone around the world via social networks, showing everyone who has wanted to see the kind of scum that this terrorist group that calls itself the "Russian army".

Eighty years ago, crimes like the ones we witnessed yesterday were commonplace in the territories occupied by Nazi Germany. The atrocities committed by Hitler's soldiers ended up plunging their country into shame for many years, a shame that many still feel today when they see the atrocities their compatriots were capable of against Jews, Poles, Gypsies and other groups. These crimes have dishonored several generations of Germans, and the same is going to happen to the Russians, no matter how much the Kremlin continues its efforts to recruit the worst scoundrels in the West to propagate its lies and try to launder his hordes of assassins.

With each of its crimes, Russia is burying its own dignity as a nation, if it ever had any, and is condemning its children and grandchildren to look on in shame at the civilized world. Today the Russian government has the cynicism to consider itself morally superior to the rest of humanity while perpetrating crimes of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes in its brutal aggression against Ukraine. We are seeing things that seemed unthinkable a few years ago, of which we thought we were vaccinated after contemplating the horrors of the Nazi death camps.

But the crimes of Putin and his henchmen are not only bringing dishonor to their own people. In addition, Russian crimes are making the resistance and courage of the Ukrainian people even more admirable, and the wretches who slander them end up being singled out for their own slander. The atrocities committed by the invaders today make two words a cry for heroes, two words that in the future should appear on monuments all over the world to remember a people who did not surrender to tyranny and who fought bravely for his freedom:

Slava Ukraini! Glory to Ukraine!
