It is the largest act of corruption in almost half a century of democracy in Spain
Today, the Spanish extreme left and its separatist allies have definitively approved the so-called amnesty law.
Spain: the list of the institutions that reject the socialist attack against the rule of law
Statement of the General Council of the Judiciary of Spain against the amnesty: it is “a serious violation of fundamental rights”
This law leaves unpunished crimes committed by Pedro Sánchez's allies during the 2017 separatist coup in Catalonia. All of this to buy the re-election of the socialist leader in exchange for seven votes from the Junts separatists, a party led by the fugitive Carles Puigemont, the main leader of that coup. This is a measure that Sánchez and his ministers said was illegal and unconstitutional before the result of the last general elections led them to say just the opposite out of pure partisan interest.
This amnesty is a blow to the rule of law, democracy and equality before the law. With it, the government grants criminal privileges to the perpetrators of serious crimes against the Constitution and against coexistence, and also serious crimes of corruption. From now on, Sanchez's government loses all moral authority to demand compliance with any rule from Spanish citizens, after having broken the principle that subjects us all to the rule of law.
Furthermore, that law is the greatest act of corruption in the democratic history of Spain. Sánchez has turned compliance with the law and our constitutional rights into a commodity that can be traded in exchange for seven votes to stay in power. It is, furthermore, an act of betrayal against Spain, since the beneficiaries of this act of corruption attacked the Constitution in order to break our national unity.
The government and its allies have received all possible warnings and numerous signs of rejection from institutions against this law. In November 2023, the General Council of Power Judicial pointed out that it is "a serious violation of fundamental rights" and that it implies "arrogating powers that the Constitution entrusts to the Courts."
Also, this law has been rejected by 11 regional governments, the Supreme Court, the 17 Superior Courts of Justice, the 4 largest associations of judges and all associations of prosecutors, including the associations of judges and prosecutors traditionally related to the PSOE. Furthermore, that law was rejected by the Senate, a rejection supported by 149 votes to 113 in favor of the amnesty. In all the years of democracy in Spain, no law had aroused such widespread rejection and never had a government so arrogantly disregarded the criticism of so many institutions.
Sánchez deserves to be brought to justice for this colossal act of corruption, but it must be noted that he had accomplices when perpetrating it. You can read below the list of deputies who have supported this amnesty law today, which has been approved by 177 votes in favor (those of the PSOE and its allies) and 172 against (PP, Vox, Unión del Pueblo Navarro and Coalición Canaria). It is almost the same result as two months ago with the exception of Martina Velarde (Podemos), who this time has not participated in the vote.
