The communist vice president illegally concealed these expenditures

Yolanda Diaz's wastefulness and its different media treatment with respect to the Alvise case

One of the functions of the media is to oversee political power, and not to defend it at all costs, as some do.

This oversight work is what allows us to identify a media outlet that is doing real journalism. Yesterday, the newspaper El Debate published an excellent exercise in journalism, bringing to light that the communist vice president Yolanda Díaz spent 44,117 euros on restaurants, hotels and trips in a single year, and that is without counting the trips she made using official state planes.

These wastes, which are difficult to justify considering that her position does not include foreign policy responsibilities, are not the only thing that is denounced in this case. Worse still is the fact that El Debate has had to resort to the courts because the vice president refused to reveal this information, an exercise in opacity that is common in dictatorships supported by communists like the second vice president, but which is intolerable in a democracy, since citizens have the right to know how our money is spent.

In response to her request, the Madrid High Court of Justice (TSJM) has ruled in favor of El Debate and forced the vice president to provide the information requested by that newspaper. Information that was requested in January 2023 and refers to the year 2022. The expenses incurred by the communist vice president's department in 2023 and 2024 remain to be known. Let us remember that the practices of concealing these expenses are illegal. Therefore, the decision of the TSJM should lead to the immediate dismissal of Díaz for denying access to information that should be public.

Given the amount of money Díaz squandered on his trips, her desire to conceal it is clear. After enjoying luxury trips at the expense of taxpayers, Díaz surely did not want the amounts to be known so as not to tarnish his political image. In other words, she wanted to enjoy these luxuries and then have no one find out.

There is another aspect of this case that exposes the double standards of this government. Months after committing these wastes, in October 2023 the PSOE and Sumar, Díaz's communist coalition, agreed to prohibit short flights by plane, with the excuse of reducing carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere. Emissions that, apparently, do not matter if they come from the official planes used by Díaz and the government, since the details of their flights in these planes are another of the issues on which they maintain total opacity in the face of the requirements that are posed to them.

In short, the coalition government of socialists and communists is enjoying a life of luxury while demanding sacrifices from citizens. Fortunately, there are still judges and journalists in Spain willing to denounce these abuses. The question is: why is there no news about these extravaganzas in the media close to the government that have been publishing news about the Alvise Pérez case?

As I said yesterday, the case of this Spanish MEP (regardless of whether or not the courts determine the existence of a crime) does not involve - as far as we know, at least - the use of public money, but the government's waste comes from the taxes we all pay. That is precisely the money whose use should be subject to greater surveillance by journalists. However, there are media that turn a blind eye to everything related to the abuses of the Sánchez government. And then they come to boast about journalism.
