PSOE and PP excluded Vox from RTVE and now Pedro Sánchez corners the PP by decree

Making a pact with an autocrat has the effect of whitewashing him and making him feel legitimised to take over all public institutions.

Sanchez takes control of RTVE by decree and corners the PP

Today it has been learned that Pedro Sánchez's government has modified by decree the election of the members of the RTVE Council, liquidating the qualified majority system that currently existed and which forced the government to agree on the members of that council with the main opposition party. The new system assigns to Congress the election of 11 of the 15 councilors, who will be elected by absolute majority, which will allow the government and its partners to completely exclude the Popular Party despite being the most voted party in the chamber.

At the same time, the new model assigns only 4 of the councillors to the Senate, where the PP has an absolute majority, so that the new system will leave the PP, which is the party with the most seats in both chambers, cornered and underrepresented. In this way, the socialists and their communist and separatist allies guarantee absolute control of RTVE for six years, even if the next general elections give way to a government of a different colour. What happened today is yet another episode in the socialist assault on all public institutions, which they are turning into the private estate of the PSOE.

In 2021, PSOE and PP excluded Vox, the third most voted party, from RTVE

It should be noted that although the PP is the biggest loser in this distribution, it also has some of the blame for this. In February 2021 I already pointed out here that the PP agreed with the PSOE on a RTVE Council that excluded Vox, which was already the third most voted party in Spain at the time and had 52 seats at the time. The pact between the PP and the PSOE excluded Vox and at the same time gave access to the council to parties with fewer seats than Vox, such as Podemos and the PNV.

The pacts with which the PP has been handing over all power to the socialists

Just two years before that pact, the PP had said that it was urgent for RTVE to "recover its independence", but when it came down to it, it did not mind excluding the third most voted party, in its eagerness to isolate Vox and to agree with the socialists on the distribution of institutions. Let us remember that in that same year, the PP agreed with the PSOE on the Court of Auditors and the office of the Ombudsman.

At the end of 2022, the PP handed Sánchez control of the Constitutional Court, again excluding Vox from the pact. In the summer of 2024, the PP agreed with the PSOE on the General Council of the Judiciary and the Central Electoral Board, again excluding Vox. Likewise, after the last European elections held this year, the European People's Party has repeated its "grand coalition" with the socialists in Brussels, a coalition that is now violating the regulations of the European Parliament to exclude the Vox group (which is the third in number of seats) of all the organs of that legislative chamber.

The PP is now a victim of the autocrat it helped whitewash

With its conduct in recent years, the PP has not only whitewashed an autocrat like Sánchez, helping to clean up his national and international image despite all the abuses he has been committing, but it has also helped him trample on the independence of the institutions, using its pacts with the socialists to corner and exclude Vox in an openly anti-democratic way. Now the PP is being cornered by the same socialists with whom it made a pact to isolate Vox. Certainly, the PP has got what it deserves.

Let's see with what moral authority the PP now criticizes Sánchez for ending up liquidating the independence of public institutions that the PP helped to trample on. An independence that will not be recovered by a new PP government (if this party wins the next elections), unless the PP stops isolating Vox and together they undo every last one of the traps that the socialists and their partners are committing, a possibility that today seems rather remote, in view of the PP's attitude of not even wanting to appear in a photo with Vox (which is the reason that explains Feijóo's absence at last Sunday's demonstration).
