A few weeks ago I was telling you here about the mountain of manure that invades La Moncloa, the palace of the presidency of the government of Spain.
I then referred to the corruption scandals of the socialist government, the PSOE and Sánchez's personal entourage, and the attempts by that party and its related media to pretend that nothing is happening. The Errejón case that broke out this week in Sumar, the communist partners of Sánchez's government, comes to add to that mountain of manure to make it reach enormous proportions.
The political leaders of the Spanish left have been displaying an arrogant attitude for many years, and it is precisely this attitude that is now making their downfall even harder. Because they are leftists, they believed they had the right to look down on the rest of us with an air of moral superiority, as if the rest of us had to accept moral lessons from those who have as allies the heirs of ETA and the supporters of the dictatorships of Cuba and Venezuela.
Obviously, this arrogant attitude has been spreading to the media, intellectual and academic left for years, which functions as a kind of priestly caste of the progressive religion that has been telling us for years how we should think, what we should eat and even that we should not have children because that, they say, harms the planet. This false leftist moralism has exploded into a thousand pieces with this week's scandal, which has knocked out a left that boasted of being "feminist".
In the wake of all these scandals, the Spanish left is going through some horrible days. I won't say that I feel sorry for them because I don't want to lie. I don't feel sorry for those who have been pointing the finger at all of us who don't think like them for years and accusing us of being fascists, backward-looking and enemies of women, among other niceties. For things as normal as opening the door for a woman and letting her go first, you were already labelled as "machxist", while at the same time, they display behaviors that make many men feel ashamed of themselves, regardless of our ideology.
However, these scandals may end up causing collateral damage, which I do regret. Unlike the left-wing mentality, I do not believe that having a certain ideology gives you moral superiority, not even my ideology. It is not only your ideas that prove the kind of person you are, but above all your actions. You can say that you defend very noble ideas and at the same time behave in a way that is inconsistent with those principles.
Like any other Spaniard, I have had left-wing friends for many years. Of course, they know what I think and I know what theirs is, we respect each other and value what we have in common. What I appreciate in these friends is that they are good people, and I say this because I know their actions and I know the good deeds they have done. I think that any Spaniard who has friends with opinions different from his could say the same.
If this whole disgusting situation makes me feel sorry for anyone, it is for those good left-wing people I know (and for many others I don't know), people who get up early every morning to go to work to support their families; men who treat women with respect and women who don't look at you badly because you are a gentleman with them; people who treat their acquaintances with respect even if they don't share their opinions; that kind of people, in short, who make the word "coexistence" so valuable in Spain.
I don't wish these good people any harm and I think they deserve better politicians than these as representatives in the institutions. I hope that this whole situation will serve, at least, to start a process of regeneration in Spain that will remind us that whatever your ideas, one must be critical and demanding with the politicians one votes for. I will continue trying to offer good arguments not only for people on the right, but also to try to make any person on the left who is willing to read me reflect.
Today, what I demand from left-wing politicians, at least, is that they stop embarrassing many of their former voters, who are good people, simple, humble and hard-working people who do not deserve this. Call elections now and let left-wing Spaniards have the opportunity to rectify their vote, because you have betrayed the trust of those who supported you.
