During the Spanish Civil War, the province of Granada, in Andalusia, was divided into two sectors for several years.
The southern and western parts of the province - including its capital - remained in the hands of the nationalists, while the northern and eastern parts remained in the hands of the republicans. In the Sierra de Huétor, northeast of the city of Granada, defensive positions were built on the front line, which are still preserved today. Yesterday, the always interesting Youtube channel Aventuras Entresierras (to which I highly recommend you subscribe) published an excellent video touring these positions and showing them from a bird's eye view.
In addition to these trenches, at the end of the video we can see the ruins of the sanatorium founded by the German Berta Wilhelmi (1858-1934), founded in 1923 with the name of Sanatorio y Dispensario de la Alfaguara, in order to treat tuberculosis patients. The sanatorium was located near the front during the Civil War, so it was damaged. The sanatorium was abandoned in 1956. This place has been linked to paranormal phenomena. In 2015, the famous journalist Iker Jiménez dedicated a broadcast of his Milenio 3 program to this place. I leave you with the video (the video is in Spanish, you can activate automatic English subtitles in the bottom bar of the player):
You can see here four screenshots from this magnificent video, as a preview. We start with a spectacular aerial image of the trenchments of the Sierra de Huétor, in the town of Alfácar. A set of Civil War defences that are very well preserved and that include some firing positions equipped with battlements, as if it were a medieval castle.
The entrance to a bunker, in the trenches of the Sierra de Huétor.
The José Antonio Barracks, in Alfácar. It was built to house the troops of the national side on the Sierra de Huétor front. The accommodations were circular, with a diameter of seven meters and capacity to accommodate 18 soldiers in each one.
The ruins of the Alfaguara Sanatorium and Dispensary, also known today as the "ghost sanatorium" due to its abandonment and the strange phenomena that some say they have observed in this place.
