Many European citizens still believe that the purpose of the Community institutions is to protect democracy in Europe.
In recent days we have been receiving the opposite message. The European Commission led by Ursula Von der Leyen, of the European People's Party (EPP), and formed by a coalition between that party, the socialists and the progressives of Renew Europe, is strengthening ties with communist China to confront Trump.
Perhaps some people do not realise what this means: Von der Leyen is allied with the largest dictatorship - which is also an ally of Vladimir Putin's dictatorship - to confront the largest democracy, simply because the new president of the United States has conservative ideas and that is something that the president of the European Commission does not tolerate, as she demonstrated with her persecution of the conservative governments of Poland and Hungary, cynically disguised as a defence of the rule of law.
We must remember that communist China is a totalitarian regime led by a single party that holds power without free elections and in violation of human rights. That regime perpetrated the greatest genocides of the 20th century, demonstrating absolute disregard for human life. From a democratic perspective, what von der Leyen is doing is equivalent to allying herself with Nazi Germany.
This rapprochement between the European Commission and communist China exhibits Von der Leyen's true idea of democracy, and makes it clear that the rule of law has never mattered to her, except to use it as a pretext to harass ideologically rival governments. This rapprochement should serve as a warning to all Europeans against the bureaucrats in Brussels, whose top leader has no qualms about approaching a communist dictatorship to confront a democratic and conservative government.
This explains Von der Leyen's silence in the face of the blows to the rule of law by Pedro Sánchez in Spain and Donald Tusk in Poland. Despite all the democratic posturing in her speeches, the current President of the European Commission and her accomplices have never wanted to protect democracy in Europe, but rather to undermine it, abusing the power they have been granted to erode our fundamental rights, turning the EU into something increasingly similar to the USSR. Some of us have been denouncing this authoritarian drift and these abuses for years. This alliance between Von der Leyen and Xi Jinping makes it clear that democracy is threatened in Europe, but not by the "extreme right", as some say, but by Von der Leyen and her gang.
