The Liberal Party again overtakes the Conservative Party in the polls

Trump's disservice to conservatives in other countries: the clear example of Canada

Donald Trump won the US presidential election in November with an "anti-woke" speech that captivated many.

Justin Trudeau resigns: the end of the woke nightmare he imposed on Canada is near

On the occasion of his inauguration, Trump framed what he called the "common sense revolution" in terms that broadly echoed what many conservatives advocate, especially his measures to end the absurdities of gender ideology, curb illegal mass immigration, end "green" policies that harm the economy, and curb censorship on social media.

However, his foreign policy has ended up shattering the hopes of many conservatives, by adopting positions that largely align with those of Putin, as we have seen in the case of Ukraine, but especially by turning his back on his European allies and -very especially- by his statements in favor of annexing Greenland (a territory belonging to Denmark) and turning Canada into the 51st state of the United States.

This crazy foreign policy not only undermines the trust of many allied countries in the United States, but also ends up hurting the electoral prospects of conservative parties in other countries, as many people end up identifying those parties with what Trump stands for. After nine years of Justin Trudeau's government, many Canadians were fed up, and this was reflected in polls that predicted a Conservative Party (CPC) victory as early as the first quarter of 2022. The distance between the Liberal Party (LPC) and the CPC reached its maximum between November 2024 and January 2025, as can be seen in the following graph from Undermedia that shows the results of various Canadian surveys in recent years.

However, since the beginning of 2025, that trend has reversed: the Liberals are making a major comeback and the Conservatives are losing more and more support. It's not hard to imagine the reasons, given the nonsense Trump has been spewing about a possible annexation of Canada. This nonsense has given the Liberals a boost, and they could now regain a majority in the next election. A possibility that, if it becomes a reality, they will have to thank the president of their southern neighbor.
