This afternoon, Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin had a long telephone conversation about the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The White House press secretary has issued a statement stating that "the movement to peace will begin with an energy and infrastructure ceasefire", but it says not a word about an end to Russian attacks on civilians in Ukraine, attacks that constitute war crimes under the Geneva Conventions. Aside from the large portion of the text devoted to empty words, the statement does not explain what conditions Putin has set and announces talks that will take place in the Middle East. In other words, they have negotiated that they will continue to negotiate.
Even more striking has been the statement released by the Kremlin via its Telegram channel, in which it talks about "the absolute necessity of eliminating the root causes of the crisis and Russia's legitimate security interests", Russia's usual way of seeking to turn Ukraine into a puppet state of Moscow. Leaving aside the Kremlin's usual propaganda and lies, the statement also states the following:
In the context of the US President's initiative to introduce a 30-day ceasefire, the Russian side has outlined a number of important points to ensure effective control over a possible ceasefire along the entire combat contact line, the need to stop forced mobilization in Ukraine and the rearmament of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
(...)
It was emphasized that the key condition for preventing the escalation of the conflict and working toward its solution through political and diplomatic means must be the complete cessation of foreign military assistance and the provision of intelligence information to Kyiv.
The statement doesn't say at any point that Russia will stop receiving military equipment from other countries (it has been receiving it from North Korea, Iran, and communist China) or that it will stop deploying soldiers. In other words, Putin intends for the condition for "peace" to be that the attacked country be left defenseless. Who could possibly think anything of that? It's as if a rapist were to set as a condition for stopping rape that women stop carrying pepper spray and that the police agree not to come to their aid.
Obviously, what Putin is proposing is not a peace agreement, but rather establishing the conditions for Ukraine's defeat. This should surprise no one. Putin has demonstrated for years what kind of person he is: a criminal tyrant. Trump's problem is believing that you can appease a bully by offering concessions, in the hope that this will motivate him to stop attacking his neighbors. On the contrary, this has always been a way to benefit bullies and profit from their aggression, as history shows. A history that Trump seems to have forgotten.
