The new US administration's about-face regarding Russia's invasion of Ukraine is leading to truly shameful events.
Condemnations from other countries of Russia for the attack on a playground
As you could read here this morning, yesterday Russia attacked a playground in Kryvyi Rih, Ukraine, killing 9 children and wounding 12. This perverse attack, which is part of the Kremlin's systematic practice of attacking civilian targets with no military value, has provoked indignation in many countries. Diplomatic representatives in Ukraine have issued statements condemning the attack and pointing the finger at the Russian invaders: Poland, United Kingdom, Germany, Ireland, Austria, Switzerland, Japan... But There has been a strange and regrettable exception.
The US Embassy comments on the attack without mentioning Russia.
The U.S. Embassy in Kyiv has shared a message from U.S. Ambassador Bridget A. Brink, stating the following:
Horrified that tonight a ballistic missile struck near a playground and restaurant in Kryvyi Rih. More than 50 people injured and 16 killed, including 6 children. This is why the war must end.
The message, published in English and Ukrainian, has drawn a barrage of criticism because it does not even mention Russia, the perpetrator of the attack. It should be recalled that on March 8, the US ambassador had already done the same about a Russian attack on Dobropillia. Similarly, on March 31, Brink published a message about drone attacks against Ukraine also without mentioning Russia.
Zelensky: “They are afraid to even say the word 'Russian' when speaking about the missile that murdered children”
The US ambassador's message has sparked outrage in Ukraine. Today, at 1:02 PM CET, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky commented:
It is critically important not to leave this Russian strike on civilians, on the city – every such strike – without a response from the world. Kryvyi Rih and all of Ukraine have already been supported by many yesterday and today. I am grateful for the principled stance of the foreign ministers of the Czech Republic, Finland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, and Austria. I thank the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy for her position and support. We value the principled statements made by the Embassies of Japan, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, and Germany. Unfortunately, the response from the U.S. Embassy is surprisingly disappointing – such a strong country, such a strong people, and yet such a weak reaction. They are afraid to even say the word “Russian” when speaking about the missile that murdered children.
The Trump administration's pro-Russian turn
The embarrassing message from the US ambassador to Ukraine is part of the Trump administration's regrettable about-turn on this invasion, with facts such as the following:
All of this is also against the backdrop of the alignment of prominent members of the Republican Party with Russian propaganda for some time, following the instructions of influential pro-Russian propagandists in the US such as Tucker Carlson.
