Polish president says that “Ukraine will also have to give in some way”

Would Andrzej Duda give part of Poland to Russia to achieve peace in Ukraine?

The disappointment many of us have experienced with Trump is not the only one we are experiencing within conservative ranks.

The Polish president's questions to those calling for Ukraine to give in to Russia
Trump puts himself in evidence and reveals one of the aspects of his betrayal of Ukraine

Duda: “Ukraine will also have to give in some way”

I have been supporting Poland for years. It is a country I admire. That is why it pains me especially to read Polish President Andrzej Duda's statements to Euronews yesterday, stating that Ukraine would have to make concessions on some issues to achieve peace with Russia:

It has to be a compromise. That is, de facto, this peace should, in my personal opinion, come down to the fact that neither side will be able to say they've won this war, because both will have to give in some way. Well, Ukraine will also have to give in some way, because that's probably what will happen. To what extent? It's difficult for me to answer at this point.

What the Polish president had been saying until a few months ago

Andrzej Duda is a member of the conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party. Like other conservative parties in other European countries, Duda's party is demonstrating a lamentable following towards Donald Trump, to the point that it seems to have forgotten what Duda himself has been defending until now. I will recall some of those statements. On February 22, 2022, when Putin had already announced that he would invade Ukraine, Duda wrote on Twitter:

I just spoke with Ukrainian President @ZelenskyyUa. I assured him that Ukraine has Poland's full and cross-party support in the fight against the Kremlin's aggression. And that the inviolability of borders is for us one of the fundamental norms of international law. And what about Russia? Tough sanctions from the EU and NATO!

In late October 2024, in an interview with the British outlet Sunday Times, Duda said the following about those calling for Ukraine to yield to Russia in order to achieve peace:

If you’re so generous towards Russia, why not give them a piece of your own land? Why should any sovereign country have to satisfy Russia? On what grounds, may I ask, does Russia deserve anything — especially someone else’s territory?

On November 19, 2024, in a message posted on Twitter, Duda wrote:

Today marks 1,000 days since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Poland's position has been constant and unwavering since the first day of the war. An independent and sovereign Ukraine must win!

He asks Ukraine for something that Poland would find unacceptable

Does Duda's idea of a "sovereign" Ukraine involve ceding part of its territory to the invaders and ending the Russian invasion with no winners or losers? Given what he said in October, would Duda hand over part of Poland to Russia to achieve peace in Ukraine?

For years, many Poles have rightly complained about the injustice done to them in World War II, when the Western Allies decided to give in to Stalin and leave Poland under a communist dictatorship, losing the Polish territory that was invaded by Russia in 1939. On what moral grounds does the Polish president betray his word and ask Ukraine for something that he would consider unacceptable if someone asked it of Poland?

Trumpism is eating away at a part of the conservative movement

Considering what we've seen in recent months, I wonder what kind of patriotism and respect for national sovereignty some European conservatives and patriots are showing toward Ukraine, asking that country to give up part of its territory to appease an invader who has been committing all kinds of crimes against the Ukrainian people for years. Trumpism is eating away at a part of the conservative movement, causing it to forget its most sacred principles to cater to the whims of the US president. I never imagined I'd see something like this.
