History shows that giving in to totalitarians only makes them feel stronger and wants more concessions.
An illegal measure that ceased to be so because it suited Sánchez.
However, there are unscrupulous or brainless politicians who believe that the totalitarians can be appeased and left satisfied. This Thursday, the Constitutional Court (TC), controlled by the Socialists, blessed Pedro Sánchez's amnesty for the perpetrators of the 2017 separatist coup in Catalonia, one of the conditions the separatists set to support the re-election of the current prime minister.
This is a condition that Sánchez and his ministers called illegal and unconstitutional before their continued power depended on the separatists of Junts, led from Waterloo by fugitive from justice Carles Puigdemont. Sánchez had no qualms about lying and saying the opposite of what he said before, granting an amnesty that is the greatest act of political corruption in the history of democracy in Spain: an exchange of criminal privileges and impunity for criminals in exchange for their political support, something intolerable in any democratic country.
Sánchez disguised this intolerable privilege as 'normalization'
In a display of cynicism, Sánchez appealed to "normalization" to grant these infamous privileges, as if the normal course of action in a state governed by the rule of law were to grant criminal privileges in exchange for political favors. This is reflected in the shameful ruling drafted by the leftist magistrates of the TC:
The ruling considers that the challenged law responds to a legitimate, explicit, and reasonable purpose. This can be deduced from both the regulatory text and its preamble, which states that the purpose of the amnesty is to reduce the institutional and political tension generated by the events of the "procés" and facilitate a scenario of reconciliation. The legislator intends to contribute to the reconciliation and "normalization" of the conflict generated by the events of the so-called "procés" and seeks to reduce the "social and political tension" existing in Catalonia, understanding that this may "worsen in the coming years as judicial proceedings linked to these events are substantiated."
After achieving amnesty, Junts now wants a separatist referendum
You would have to be a real idiot to believe that Catalan separatism would settle for this. Like any totalitarian movement, Catalan separatism bases its relationship with the rest of the political forces on blackmail, and the more you give in to a blackmailer, the more incentive you give them to increase the price of their extortion, because you send a message of weakness that favors those who use extortion to achieve their political goals. Just yesterday, without waiting for 24 hours to pass since the Constitutional Court's ruling, the Junts separatists were already demanding a separatist referendum from Sánchez, that is, a process to break up Spain and continue violating the Constitution, which according to Article 2 "is based on the indissoluble unity of the Spanish Nation, the common and indivisible homeland of all Spaniards".
The socialists said there would be no referendum: they said the same about the amnesty
Of course, there is no longer anything to guarantee that Sánchez will not also give in to that demand. Three years ago the socialists said they would not accept a separatist referendum, just as they also denied that an amnesty was legal and then changed their discourse diametrically out of pure convenience. Sánchez has already shown he has no qualms about trampling on current legislation to remain in power, and a separatist referendum will not be an obstacle to continuing to gain the support of the separatists and thus being able to continue harassing the judges investigating the Socialist corruption scandals from power. That is what is most important to Sánchez, not the unity of Spain.
The separatists are insatiable: they will always ask for more
Let's use our imagination (there's no need to make a great effort anymore) and think about what will happen if Sánchez agrees and allows the separatists to organize a referendum to break up Spain, a referendum as manipulated as the one they set up during the 2017 coup, and which of course would have its outcome predetermined by Puigdemont and his gang. The demands wouldn't even stop there (and I say this also for the separatists who pose as patriots and say we should get rid of the separatists by giving them what they want). After separating Catalonia, they would ask for the annexation of the Valencian Community and the Balearic Islands. Then they would demand the annexed areas of Aragon, Murcia, and Castilla-La Mancha. The next step would be to claim a "historical debt" whose amount would increase more and more, as the separatists obtained new concessions.
It's time to deprive separatism of oxygen
Sánchez, like all the idiots who believe these totalitarians can be satisfied, doesn't realize that the separatists are insatiable and will always demand more, because their only banner is hatred of Spain. For them, all of Catalonia's problems are due to the rest of Spain, and their entire political action is based on turning these false accusations into payment for blackmail. The only way to defeat separatism is to deprive it of oxygen. It's not enough to deny it any concession: we must prevent separatism from using democratic institutions to destroy them from within. If that means outlawing it, then so be it. In Germany, separatist parties are illegal, and I don't see anyone being outraged by that.
