David Corenswet takes on the lead role in this new feature film

'Superman' (2025): Is a new movie about the most famous superhero worth it?

Although not the first superhero, Superman is undoubtedly the most famous, since his creation in 1938 by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster.

This alien from the planet Krypton and endowed with great superpowers is surely the superhero who has made the most appearances in cinema. The first ones consisted of animated shorts broadcast between 1941 and 1943, during World War II. Now a new reboot comes to the big screen, this time with American David Corenswet playing the role of Superman. He is already the third actor to play this role in the last 20 years, after Brandon Routh (2006) and Henry Cavill (2013-2022).

This new film is directed by American filmmaker James Gunn, who has already directed good films in this genre, such as "Guardians of the Galaxy" (2014) and its second (2017) and third parts (2023), in addition to being a guest director on "Doctor Strange" (2016) and executive producer on "Avengers: Infinity War" (2018) and "Avengers: Endgame" (2019).

Personally, I wasn't sure if this movie would be worth a watch, but I must admit that I liked it and I think it puts a good spin on Superman, with some classic touches, such as the appearance of the dog Krypto, created in 1955. Corenswet is very good in the leading role, giving a more casual and human feel to the famous superhero. Nicholas Hoult gives an excellent performance as Lex Luthor, perhaps the most evil version of this villain we've seen so far, and also confirms the tendency in the US to use British actors in bad guy roles... Rachel Brosnahan is good in the role of Lois Lane. I was intrigued to see Skyler Gisondo playing Jimmy Olsen. I saw him three years ago in the series "The Resort" and I really liked his performance. Of the rest of the cast, I confess that the already veteran Nathan Fillion plays an atypical role as Green Lantern, giving it an original touch.

As an additional note, Australian Milly Alcock makes a brief appearance as Supergirl, a way to introduce the film she will star in as this character next year. I loved her role as Meg in the series "Upright"; if she does it half as well, then it'll be worth it.

As for values, the film has some good messages, such as the importance of our actions and decisions in determining who we are, or the duty to do good. Otherwise, it seems that Hollywood is moving away from the "woke" craze, because I didn't see anything in this film that indicated its presence. In fact, it seemed to me like a movie that could be watched with children, which is very much appreciated. If you want to have a good time this July, I recommend it.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The film has two post-credits scenes. The first (rather brief) comes after the first set of credits, and the second appears after the entire black-background credits section. They're rather dispensable (I think Marvel is more skilled at post-credits scenes), but since you're paying for the ticket, take advantage of the opportunity to see them.

I leave you here with the trailer for this movie:
