A quiet walk through Moghegno, a Swiss village whose origins date back to ancient Rome

Switzerland is known for being a mountainous country with spectacular landscapes. Some of its mountain villages are beautiful places.

An example of one of these beautiful Swiss villages is Moghegno, once a municipality, but due to population loss in recent decades, it was eventually incorporated into the municipality of Maggia in 2004. Moghegno is in the canton of Ticino, the only Swiss canton whose official language is Italian. This is evident in the village's streets, marked with elegant signs in that language.

This place has been inhabited since the time of ancient Rome, and a Roman necropolis from the early centuries AD has been found here. Moghegno gradually lost population due to emigration, and according to the last municipal census taken in 2003, it had 376 inhabitants. The appearance of this place is as if time stood still long ago. It has beautiful, old stone houses and winding streets. In the video, we hear the bells of this church ringing. It is a Catholic church: the Church of the Most Holy Virgin of the Assumption. Documents date the original church to the 16th century, although it was completely rebuilt in the 17th century.
