Last Sunday, September 14, the Peruvian Navy's training ship BAP Unión (BEV-161) arrived at the port of Vigo.
The ship was carrying 227 crew members, including 71 cadets from the Peruvian Naval Academy. This visit to Spain is part of this year's Foreign Training Voyage (VIEX), which began in May and will conclude in October. On Wednesday, September 17, just after 6:00 p.m. local time, the ship set sail from the port of Vigo on a sunny afternoon. You can watch the video of its departure here:
The BAP Unión was launched on December 22, 2014 at the SIMA shipyard in Callao, Peru, entering service on January 27, 2016.
The BAP Unión is a four-masted vessel with a length of 115.5 metres, a beam of 13.5 metres, a depth of 11.5 metres, a draft of 6.5 metres and a displacement of 3,200 tonnes, making it slightly larger and heavier than the Spanish Navy's training ship "Juan Sebastián de Elcano".
Like its Spanish counterpart, the BAP Unión is used to train future officers of the Peruvian Navy and also acts as a naval ambassador for that American republic. During its stay in Vigo, the ship's masts were illuminated with the colors of the Peruvian flag at night. I hope to see it more often in my city. You can see more photos of this visit here.
