When it comes to recognizing the existence of a sovereign and independent country, many governments have adopted a shocking double standard.
Recognizing fanatics who want to destroy their neighbors as a state
This double standard is clearly reflected in the calls by some governments for a "two-state" solution for Israel and Palestine, calls made in the wake of the brutal massacre perpetrated by Hamas on October 7, 2023, which is a way of rewarding Palestinian terrorism for perpetrating the largest anti-Jewish massacre since the Holocaust. What is being asked of Israel is something that no minimally sensible country would accept: that it recognize alongside its territory a state ruled by fanatics who want to destroy Israel and murder Jews, a state that is dedicated to rewarding terrorists for murdering Israeli citizens, as the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) has been doing for years.
It should be remembered that the two-state solution was proposed in 1947 by the UN with the plan to partition the former British Mandate of Palestine. The Arab countries refused and invaded Israel after its independence, with the aim of destroying the Jewish State, losing that war and all those that the Arab countries started against Israel in the following decades, until today. Obviously, there can be no peace or coexistence with terrorists who do not recognize Israel and are obsessed with murdering Jews, in a continuation of the pact between the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem and the Third Reich during World War II, a pact to exterminate the Hebrew people.
157 countries recognize Palestine, but only 12 recognize the Republic of China
Currently, 157 countries recognize Palestine as a state, a recognition also made by the UN and UNESCO. The paradox is that Palestine is a dictatorship (the last Palestinian elections were held in 2006 and there have been no further elections in 19 years) without clear borders and without a single government (Fatah controls Judea and Samaria, while Hamas controls Gaza). The PNA is the only government in the world recognized by the UN and UNESCO and by so many countries under these conditions, which is why its territory should not even be recognized as a sovereign and independent country.
Things change if we go to the other side of the world. The Republic of China (Taiwan) is an independent state that has occupied the same territory with clear borders since 1949. Currently, that country has one of the most prosperous economies in the world. In fact, Taiwan's GDP exceeds that of wealthy European countries such as Belgium, Sweden, Ireland, Norway, Austria, Denmark, and Finland. The Taiwanese economy has specialized in high technology, with such prominent global firms as TSMC, Foxconn, Pegatron, Quanta Computer, and Compal Electronics. Likewise, Taiwan is a democratic country and has its own Armed Forces.
However, only 12 countries have diplomatic relations with the Republic of China. In Europe, the only country that recognizes free China is the Holy See. Of the 157 countries that recognize Palestine as a state, only 9 recognize Taiwan: Belize, Guatemala, Eswatini, Haiti, the Vatican, Paraguay, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. This is due to blackmail by the People's Republic of China, a communist dictatorship that has ruled mainland China without free elections and through a one-party regime since 1949. This dictatorship does not allow a country to maintain simultaneous diplomatic relations with both free and communist China.
The UN and many countries give in to blackmail from communist China
Beijing has been using its economic power to gradually reduce Taiwan's international recognition and also its influence at the UN. Taiwan is the most populous and richest of all those not admitted to the UN as members, a very short list that includes three other countries: Kosovo (split from Serbia), the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (mostly occupied by Morocco), and the Holy See (which is recognized by the UN only as an observer country). The situation is as absurd as if the UN recognized North Korea (a communist dictatorship) but not South Korea (a democracy), or had not admitted West Germany, a democratic country, but had admitted the communist dictatorship of East Germany.
It should be noted that unlike Palestine, Taiwan does not harbor terrorist groups and does not engage in massacres among its neighboring countries. The Republic of China is a prosperous country where its citizens enjoy freedom and desire a peaceful life, as is the case with Israel. In fact, it is communist China that constantly threatens to invade free China, threats that are never censured by the UN (Beijing has not received a single condemnation from the United Nations General Assembly for this). The Beijing dictatorship treats Taiwan as if it were legally a province, when it has never been part of the People's Republic of China. The Taiwanese not only have to endure this affront, but they also see that this communist dictatorship has a permanent seat and veto power on the UN Security Council.
The double standards of Pedro Sánchez's government on this issue
As a Spaniard, I want to publicly denounce that Pedro Sánchez's government, which is fueling the conflict with Israel to cover up its corruption scandals, is one of the governments that insist on not recognizing Taiwan, but with one difference from other governments: the coalition cabinet of socialists and communists chaired by Sánchez treats the Beijing dictatorship in a friendly manner and defends openly to that criminal regime, which perpetrated one of the largest genocides in history in the 20th century, with tens of millions of dead. A genocide about which Sánchez and his ministers never say anything, while falsely accusing Israel of committing one.
