The Polish Army is undergoing a comprehensive rearmament process, with armored personnel carriers being one of its strongest and most notable assets.

The K2 Black Panther features that the Polish Army loves: “It is an excellent tank”
The M1 Abrams tank shows its Achilles heel in Poland compared to the South Korean K2

This process includes the acquisition of 116 M1A1 FEP Abrams tanks (already received) and 250 M1A2 SEPv3 (now in the delivery process), as well as 1,000 South Korean K2 Black Panther tanks, one of the most advanced models on the market. As we saw here, the first deliveries of this model began three years ago, with the first ten out of a total of 180 K2 tanks. In addition, Poland will receive 820 K2PL, a version adapted to its needs. Yesterday, Hyundai Rotem published a video showing the characteristics of this armored vehicle:

The K2PL is truly spectacular, and the video does it justice. Here we can see some of the features reviewed in it.

At the beginning of the video, we see the initial version of the K2 (below). The image digitally transforms this vehicle into the K2PL, showing the differences between the two.

The initial version of the K2 is already an excellent tank. In fact, Polish tankers are very happy with this model, with unparalleled accuracy thanks to this model's exclusive projectile, the KSTAM, a type of smart munition whose characteristics are secret but which is known to have an effective range of 2 kilometers and a maximum range of 8 kilometers.

The Polish K2s already have the MAWS active protection system (APS), which is the model included in these South Korean tanks. However, a few weeks ago it was confirmed that the K2PL will carry the best APS on the market, the Trophy, manufactured by the Israeli company Rafael Advanced Defense Systems. This system will protect the K2PL from anti-tank grenades and missiles, detecting the launches and nullifying them with fragmentation charges, as it already does in the Israeli Merkava Mark IV tanks.

Another notable feature of the KP2L is its two-layered anti-drone system (ADS), with the first layer capable of shooting down drones using electronic warfare (EW) and the second layer aimed at physically shooting them down with the APS Trophy.

The video also shows the Remote Controlled Weapon Station (RCWS) that the tank will have on its turret. So far, it has been confirmed that the K2PL will have a 12.7 mm SNT Motiv K6 machine gun on its RCWS, a South Korean variant of the M2 Browning.

The video also showcases another of the K2's unique features: its advanced ISU suspension system with height control, which allows the vehicle's height to be adjusted, giving it a lower profile in off-track positions.

The video also shows the automatic loader that the K2PL will carry in the turret to feed its Hyundai WIA CN08 120 mm smoothbore main gun. This loader holds 16 rounds, with another 24 stored in the front of the barge.

For now, the K2s are proving to be more suitable for Poland than the M1 Abrams, especially in the swampy and muddy terrain of Masuria, the area closest to the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad and where Poland would be most likely to be subjected to a ground attack. In addition to its advanced suspension, the K2 (55 tons) is lighter than the M1A2 SEP (63 tons). Polish tankers are already noticing the difference: the K2 proves to be more mobile than the Abrams in muddy terrain. The K2PL will be slightly heavier, as it will have reinforced armor. It is worth asking whether this will make it lose that advantage over its American competitor.

The K2PL will be manufactured in Poland and deliveries are expected to begin in 2026. The Polish Army will not only have one of the largest armored forces in Europe, but with the K2PL it will also have one of the most advanced tanks on the continent.
