There are media outlets that believe anything goes when it comes to demonizing values they don't like, including patriotism.
This Thursday, December 4th, the leftist channel La Sexta published a video announcing a program about the rise of the "far right" among young Spaniards. The video begins by showing images of neo-fascist and Francoist groups, but the interesting part comes at the 12-second mark. You can watch it here:
Muchos jóvenes están siendo seducidos por el discurso de la ultraderecha
Fachavales: ¿cómo hemos llegado hasta aquí?

At that moment, La Sexta shows an image of a young man in a room with a Spanish flag in the background. A speech by Hitler is heard, and then the flag disappears, giving way to images of a nazi parade. The leftist Atresmedia channel leaves little room for doubt with this manipulation: it is identifying the Spanish flag with Hitler and nazism. The same flag that appears in the Spanish Constitution, with the coat of arms approved in 1981, a flag that is displayed on official buildings.
That flag is not used by far-right groups, who prefer the flag with the Eagle of Saint John (used during Franco's dictatorship), with other symbols, or even with the coat of arms cropped out. But La Sexta didn't care: it's identifying the flag of a democratic country with a totalitarian regime that committed genocide, as if any young Spaniard who has their country's flag hanging in their room were a Nazi.
It must be said that if Spain is experiencing a resurgence of the far right (the real one, the one that despises democracy and considers violence legitimate for political ends), it is largely because the left has spent decades trivializing fascism and nazism, using them as a weapon to demonize anyone who dares to contradict its dogmas. Completely legitimate and democratic principles are systematically identified by the left with the "far right" to discredit and intimidate those who disagree.
The problem for the left is that these crude attempts to demonize dissent are becoming less and less effective, which is something to celebrate in a democratic country, because what the left has actually done for years is try to prevent the free exchange of ideas, criminalizing those who don't subscribe to their ideological positions and thus disguising the growing leftist authoritarianism. As a consequence, with this underhanded tactic, the left has ended up benefiting genuine fascists and nazis, allowing them to blend in better and trivializing these totalitarian movements. Instead of correcting course, La Sexta is now going a step further and associating the Flag of Spain with nazism. It's a nauseating manipulation.
