An opaque operation to tie Spain to the world's largest authoritarian regime

In 1986, 40 years ago, the Spanish people expressed in a national referendum their desire to be part of NATO.

This has been one of the few issues submitted to a national referendum in almost half a century of democracy in Spain. Besides that one, only one other national referendum was held during this time: the one that served to approve the 1978 Constitution. The 1986 referendum served to confirm Spain's willingness to be part of that part of the free world prepared to actively defend democracy against those who threaten it. At that time, the greatest threat to peace in Europe was the Soviet dictatorship, with its capital in Moscow.

Communist China, the world's largest authoritarian regime

Today, the greatest threat to peace in Europe is Putin's Russia, whose main ally is China, led by a one-party regime, the Communist Party of China (CPC), which has ruled that country without free elections since 1949. It is a regime headed by a cold dictator, Xi Jinping, whom many Western media outlets whitewash by simply calling him "president" and omitting the fact that he leads an anti-democratic regime that gravely violates human rights. In fact, during the rule of dictator Mao Zedong, communist China perpetrated the largest genocide in history. Some estimates indicate that the death toll could have reached 82 million (today the country has about 1.4 billion inhabitants).

A new Sánchez's visit to China without having explained what he agreed to on the previous one

Yesterday, it was revealed through that dictatorship that Sánchez is preparing his fourth official visit to China in four years. It will take place from April 11 to 15. This visit confirms the role of the current Spanish government as the main partner of that dictatorship in the European Union, but it is shrouded in murky details. Today, the Spanish newspaper VozPópuli reports that Sánchez will close a series of opaque technology deals in China following mediation by the lobby of the socialist José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, who was president of the Spanish government between 2004 and 2011 and is currently facing heavy criticism for his ties and business dealings with the socialist dictatorship of Venezuela.

The same media outlet reported today that Sánchez is returning to China without having explained the details of his meeting with Xi Jinping a year ago, details that the parliamentary opposition demanded to know, but which the Socialist leader refused to provide, once again demonstrating a lack of transparency with which Sánchez is breaking records never before achieved by previous Spanish governments.

Amidst growing hostility toward democracies like the United States and Israel, hostility fostered by Sánchez's own government, his party, and its allies, in Spain there seems to be no clear awareness of what this opaque operation implies for the country: tying it to the world's largest authoritarian regime. A regime whose single party has ties to all major Chinese companies and uses its economic power to gain influence globally. In this particular case, Chinese influence networks in Spain could be creating a web that the next government will find difficult to dismantle, if it has the will to do so (let us remember that the People's Party has also been maintaining contacts with the CPC).

This opaque operation may have a significant ideological influence (we are talking about two governments that share ideologies hostile to liberalism, capitalism, and Western culture), but we cannot ignore the fact that Sánchez is surrounded by serious corruption scandals, which affect his government, his party, and even his personal circle. Coincidentally, a considerable part of that corruption has to do with the irregular purchase of medical supplies during the pandemic, purchases made precisely from China.

Instead of calling elections, Sánchez is mortgaging Spain's future with China

Thus, we find ourselves in a paradox: a government that has been unable to pass a new budget this term, lacking sufficient parliamentary support to approve its accounts, not only fails to call elections but is mortgaging Spain to the world's largest dictatorship, severing our country's ties with major democracies and distancing us from the transatlantic links that Spaniards approved in a referendum. It is logical to ask: who benefits from Sánchez's shady dealings with China?
