Fighting forest fires is a risky endeavor that can sometimes lead to very dangerous situations.

Yesterday, the First Emergency Intervention Battalion (BIEM I) of the Military Emergency Unit (UME), based in Torrejón de Ardoz (Madrid), and the Fifth Emergency Intervention Battalion (BIEM V), based in León, were deployed to combat the Cuevas del Valle forest fire in Mombeltrán (Ávila). Here we see a video from the UME showing the deployment of the BIEM I vehicles:

This afternoon, The Twitter account of ATBRIF, the Association of Workers of the Forest Fire Reinforcement Brigade (BRIF) of the Ministry of Ecological Transition, has published this video in which we see the moment in which a fire front was about to completely burn down a BIEM I truck on a forest road in the aforementioned fire in Ávila:

ATBRIF has also published a video showing the damage suffered by the vehicle, a Renault Trucks K 430 4x4 fire truck, ET 120445 (the UME has 47 units of this model):

"The fire has jumped the runway reaching a UME fire engine truck", ATBRIF has indicated, which adds: "fortunately only material damage."

ATBRIF has published this series of photos in which we see forest firefighters from a BRIF extinguishing the flames in the UME vehicle.

"Luckily, it was just a scare and teamwork continues", ATBRIF notes. The UME has not published anything about this incident on its Twitter channel.

In this image published by ATBRIF, now with less smoke, we see the state the truck is in:

Here is the enlarged image, in which we see the burns in the vehicle's cabin and rear compartment:

This incident should help us appreciate even more the work done by the members of the UMW and forest firefighters, true heroes who, in exchange for very modest salaries, perform risky work protecting our forests and our homes from fire. My deepest gratitude to them.

Finally, my special thoughts and prayers for the 58-year-old forest firefighter who died today in a traffic accident while he was on his way to the fire. Today was his day off, but he went to the extinguishing work to replace another colleague, given the extent of the fire. My condolences and my hug to his family.
