The pursuit of the Islamist vote is leading the Spanish left to adopt increasingly aberrant ideological positions.
These are degrading garments, already banned in several European countries.
This afternoon, the Congress of Deputies debated a proposed Organic Law for the protection of women's dignity and public safety in public spaces (the text can be read here) presented by Vox and supported by the People's Party. This initiative has a single article that called for a ban on the use of the veils known as the niqab and burka in public spaces.
For those unfamiliar with these garments, the niqab and the burqa are two veils that cover almost the entire body of a woman, concealing it from the eyes of men. These garments symbolize the submission of women to men and are promoted by the most extremist variants of Islam. Both because of their degrading nature for women and the security risks they pose, these veils have been banned in European countries such as Austria, Bulgaria, Denmark, France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and Switzerland.
The left and its separatist partners reject banning the burka in Spain
For now, Spain will not follow in the footsteps of those countries in defending women's dignity because today the left voted unanimously against this initiative, which was rejected by 177 votes against (those of the PSOE and its separatist partners - including those of Junts, Carles's party Puigdemont (and the far left), 170 votes in favor and one abstention. That is to say, the same left that boasts of being "feminist" has today defended a degrading form of female submission to men, simply because it is promoted by radical Islamism and the left is desperate to obtain their votes, even at the cost of women's dignity.
The scandalous statements by leftist leaders about the burka
Throughout today, there have been truly nauseating statements from left-wing leaders on this issue. The communist vice president Yolanda Díaz defended the burka from the Moncloa Palace, stating that "it violates the Spanish Constitution in articles 14 and 16, which also relate to religious freedom". This statement is completely absurd, since those articles do not protect attacks against women's dignity such as forcing them to wear a garment that covers their entire body.
The PSOE spokesperson in Congress, Patxi López, has also defended the burka stating: "Our Constitution speaks of religious freedom, and for some, wearing the burka is part of that expression of religious freedom." This statement, besides being false, is an exhibition of double standards. And the fact is that the PSOE defends the burka, a degrading garment for women, in the name of the same religious freedom that it trampled on in 2023 when it prohibited a group of Catholics from praying in the street, simply because that street is the same one where the PSOE's national headquarters are located, and when it threatened by imposing fines on Catholics who pray near abortion centers, classifying the mere act of praying as a form of harassment.
Seeking the Islamist vote at the expense of women's dignity
In the end, the Islamophilia of the Spanish left leads it to betray women in a defense of the burka that demonstrates not only its absolute contempt for the dignity of women who are forced to wear this symbol of submission to men, but also sends the message that the PSOE's concept of "religious freedom" allows Islam anything, but Catholics are not even allowed to pray in Ferraz Street; it's not like the socialists would be bothered if they heard a "Ave Maria".
After this, what will we see next from Spanish socialists and communists? Will the left end up defending female genital mutilation and child marriage as well? These are two other abominations supported by extremist forms of Islam. Will socialists and communists also claim that this is part of religious freedom, hoping to win over Islamist votes?
