The Rock of Gibraltar, in the hands of the United Kingdom since 1713, has a flat area at its southern end known as Europa Point.

This spot, from which the North African coast is clearly visible, has a lighthouse built in 1838 and managed by Trinity House, the organization responsible for maritime lighthouses in England, Wales, and the Channel Islands. There are also two religious buildings: one Catholic, the Shrine of Our Lady of Europe (a medieval temple that belonged to the British Ministry of Defence until 1961, when it was transferred to the Catholic Diocese of Gibraltar; in 1979, Saint John Paul II consecrated Our Lady of Europe as patron saint of this British colony), and one Muslim, the Ibrahim al-Ibrahim Mosque (the southernmost mosque in Europe, built at the initiative of King Fahd of Saudi Arabia and inaugurated in 1997).

At Punta de Europa there is also an old coastal artillery position, Harding's Battery, built by the British in 1858 on the site of an earlier battery. Initially equipped with two cannons, it now has a 320 mm RML gun and its tunnels have been turned into a museum, with information about its history and natural surroundings. At Punta de Europa you can also see some remains of an old radio station and other coastal positions. On Monday, Aventuras Entresierras (an excellent YouTube channel that I recommend you subscribe to) posted an interesting video exploring that area (the video is in Spanish; you can activate automatic English subtitles in the bottom bar of the player):

You can see some images from this interesting video here. We begin with a view of the western side of the Rock of Gibraltar. At its highest point, 426 meters, is an old artillery battery, O'Hara's Battery, which is now part of the Upper Rock Nature Reserve.

The Punta de Europa Lighthouse. It is a cylindrical masonry tower, painted white with a horizontal red stripe. It is 20 meters high and has illuminated this location since August 1, 1841, with a beam that reaches a distance of 18 nautical miles.

The 320mm RML gun of Harding Battery. This enormous piece of artillery was initially installed there in 1878. The gun was removed at the beginning of the 20th century, and during World War II, this position was used as an anti-aircraft battery with a 40mm Bofors autocannon. The RML gun was discovered in 2013 half-buried in the former Royal Navy dockyard at Gibdock, in the western part of Gibraltar. It was restored and placed back in its original location. In the video, you can see the tunnels of this battery.

In the video, we see the explorers traversing this fortified position. It is a coastal position built during World War II, in the rocky area on the south side of Sandy Bay beach, on the eastern side of the colony.
