António Guterres denounces a Russian attack on the UN mentioning Ukraine but not Russia

The Secretary-General of the United Nations, the Portuguese socialist António Guterres, is once again the subject of a new controversy.

UN Secretary General's shameful attitude towards dictators Putin and Lukashenko
The infamy of the UN: it invokes against Israel the article that it has never invoked against Russia

This Thursday you could read here an information about the Russian attack on a vehicle of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Kherson, Ukraine, an attack made with FPV drones, so that the invaders knew perfectly well that they were attacking a vehicle on a humanitarian mission.

The UN Secretary-General did not comment on this attack until Friday at 8:57 p.m. CET. On his personal Twitter account, António Guterres posted a message stating: "Alarmed that a clearly-marked @UN vehicle was struck twice in Kherson city in Ukraine this week. Civilians & civilian objects must be respected & protected at all times. International law must be respected."

The message has received a barrage of criticism on Twitter, since in the text, the UN chief cites Ukraine but not Russia, which is the country responsible for that attack.

Similarly, on Thursday, Andrea de Domenico, head of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Ukraine, stated that he did not know who had carried out the attack, despite the fact that it occurred in Kherson, a city where the Russians conduct "human safaris" by attacking and killing civilians with drones:

This Friday, a Russian Telegram channel claimed responsibility for the attack, stating that it was carried out by drone operators from the 18th Guards Joint Army "Dnipro" of the Russian Army. The Russian channel claimed that the attacked vehicle was a Ukrainian armored vehicle, which is patently false, as can be seen in the UN video. It was a vehicle marked with the initials "UN" (United Nations) and with UN license plates, as can be clearly seen in this other video published by a Ukrainian channel:

The Russian channel that claimed responsibility for the attack released a video showing how it happened. That video has circulated widely on social media in recent hours, but apparently it hasn't reached the UN:

This is not the first time the UN has been at the center of controversy over its attitude towards Russia. In October 2024, António Guterres traveled to the Russian city of Kazan to participate in the BRICS summit, displaying a subservient attitude towards Vladimir Putin, for which the UN chief was the target of much criticism:

Likewise, in December 2023, Guterres invoked Article 99 of the UN Charter against Israel, an article that serves to alert the UN Security Council to any matter that, in its opinion, could endanger the maintenance of international peace and security. This is an article that Guterres has never invoked against Russia in its four years of invasion of Ukraine, nor against North Korea, China, or Iran for their threats and attacks against neighboring countries. He has only invoked it against Israel, and he did so two months after that country suffered the largest terrorist attack in its history.

On the other hand, Guterres shows a very different way of referring to attacks on the UN depending on who the perpetrator is. We have already seen the case that occurred this week. On March 30, an explosive device planted by Hezbollah terrorists killed two Indonesian peacekeepers; Guterres published a statement of condemnation without naming the perpetrators of the attack. Similarly, in mid-April, Hezbollah terrorists murdered a French UN peacekeeper in Lebanon. Guterres condemned the attack without mentioning the perpetrators, just as he has done now with the Russians. However, a few days later Guterres directly accused Israel of the death of an Indonesian peacekeeper.
