Is Pedro Sánchez trying to win over the extreme left vote at Ukraine's expense?

Yesterday Russia carried out another massive attack against civilian targets in Ukraine, particularly targeting its capital, Kyiv.

A massive Russian attack on Kyiv condemned by international leaders

In a message posted at 12:14 PM CET, the President of Ukraine stated: "Tonight, the Russians struck Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities and communities. The largest number of missiles was directed at the capital – at ordinary residential buildings, at schools; they burned down a food market, one of Kyiv’s oldest markets. The Russian strike effectively destroyed the Chornobyl Museum, damaged the National Art Museum and the building housing the office of Germany’s ARD. As of now, 69 people have been reported injured in the capital. Tragically, two people were killed in this senseless Russian attack."

Zelensky posted this video showing the damage caused by that Russian terrorist attack against Kyiv. Throughout Sunday, the Ukrainian president posted messages of thanks to the international leaders who condemned the attack: the presidents of the European Council, the European Commission and the European Parliament, the presidents of Estonia, Finland, France, Latvia, Lithuania and Moldova and los prime ministers of Germany, Austria, Canada, Denmark e Italy.

Socialist Pedro Sánchez remains silent once again

As has happened before, Pedro Sánchez said absolutely nothing all day Sunday. The Spanish Prime Minister has long only posted messages of condemnation on Twitter when he has something to say about Israel. Although he has been supporting Ukraine, Sánchez maintains a low profile regarding the invasion of the country, quite the opposite of what he does with Israel, a country that suffered its worst terrorist attack on October 7, 2013 (which was also the worst anti-Semitic massacre since the Holocaust) and with which the Spanish Socialist leader is visibly obsessed.

Sánchez's low profile against Putin while doing favors for RussiaSánchez has repeatedly accused Israel of "genocide," a categorically false accusation with which the socialist leader is clearly seeking to gain the support of the Spanish far left, which is rabidly anti-Semitic. However, Sánchez has not once accused Putin or Russia of "genocide," or even of "terrorism," despite the massacres of Ukrainian civilians perpetrated by the invaders in cities like Bucha and Izyum and the constant and systematic Russian attacks against civilian targets in Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Spain continues to buy record amounts of natural gas from Russia, helping to finance Putin's aggression against Ukraine. At the same time, the public media controlled by the Sánchez government are copying the Kremlin's propaganda strategy against Ukraine, repeating the same bias they exhibit against Israel. At the same time, Sánchez has been dedicated to sabotaging NATO from within and among his national and foreign partners there are allies of Russia.

The political reasons for Sánchez's silence on Ukraine

There are two reasons that can explain Sánchez's double standards regarding Ukraine. On the one hand, his government's largest international partner is currently communist China, which, coincidentally, is the largest ally of Vladimir Putin's dictatorship. On the other hand, the Spanish far left has repeatedly shown its alignment with the Kremlin, even refusing to condemn the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Spanish communists continue to maintain the inertia that for decades kept them loyal to Moscow, something explainable, on the other hand, by the wave of nostalgia for the Soviet dictatorship that Putin is promoting in Russia and his criticisms of the attempts to veto communism in Western Europe. Currently, Sánchez's party, the PSOE, is suffering a series of electoral defeats largely due to socialist corruption scandals. Sánchez and the PSOE have only one way out: to rely on the far left and try to win over their votes, as they have completely lost the political center.

In this political strategy, Ukraine becomes an obstacle, a topic to be avoided at all costs, remaining silent in the face of constant Russian attacks against civilians in Ukraine and focusing all the attention of the Spanish government on Israel, a democratic country for which the far left harbors a pathological hatred. That is why Sánchez doesn't even dare to accuse Putin of terrorism and genocide, because he knows that would upset his communist partners and many left-wing extremists whose support is necessary to prevent the PSOE's total collapse in the next general elections.
