Pedro Sánchez and NATO: Unmasking a government allied with Putin's puppets

Today, the international image of socialist Pedro Sánchez is literally in tatters, at least in the West.

Sánchez destroys his personal image in NATO...

Surely the dictators of countries like Venezuela, Cuba, China or Iran will feel very pleased with him, but in the NATO sphere Sánchez has become an outcast after his lie of a few months ago to try to invest less in defense than other countries, assuming the commitment to reach 5% of GDP in that investment during the Alliance meeting in June and then falsely claiming that NATO had agreed to make an exception for Spain, a ridiculous hoax that was clearly denied by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.

This week, Rutte has clearly disavowed Sánchez in his eagerness to betray that commitment. It has done so, moreover, at a time when Russia is generating more and more tension against allied countries, with air raids in Lithuania, Estonia, Polonia and Romania and airports closed in several countries due to the mysterious appearance of drones, a fact that some relate to a possible Russian operation to generate instability in Europe. Sánchez has chosen the worst moment to say that he wants to pay less than his neighbors but at the same time enjoy the security that others pay for.

... and in doing so he also damages the image of Spain

This is becoming a serious problem for Spain, since Sánchez is not only tarnishing his personal image, but also that of his country. When some allies refer to that unsupportive neighbor who wants to pay less, while others prepare to defend themselves against an attack, they are not talking about Sánchez, but about Spain. In fact, as president of the government, and despite governing in a minority, after having lost the last elections and without even having enough parliamentary support to approve his public accounts, when Sánchez speaks at international forums he does so in the name of Spain and tarnishes our image abroad, something that does not seem to worry him at all.

A mixture of ideological prejudices and perverse alliances

Sánchez's position is the result of a mixture of ideological prejudices and perverse alliances. The current president of the Spanish government is a leftist who has exhibited the most toxic stereotypes of the left regarding defense. Let us remember that in 2014, when he was in the opposition, he said that the Ministry of Defense was unnecessary. Once in power, the socialist leader has made Spain the NATO country that invests the lowest percentage of its GDP in defense.

An Armed Forces that lose basic capabilities

This policy is leaving our Armed Forces without some basic capabilities. For example, Spain is one of the European countries with the longest coastline, and today we don't even have maritime patrol aircraft, following the retirement from service of the last P-3 Orion aircraft of the Spanish Air Force in 2022. Furthermore, his government has already made it clear that Spain will be left without naval fighters, a capability that Spain has had for decades and that will be lost due to the government's refusal to purchase the F-35B, perhaps because it is an American aircraft. This series of nonsense has been completed with a veto on Israel that leaves Spain without important defense systems.

Putin's puppets influencing Sánchez's government

Analyzing all this coldly, sometimes it seems that Sánchez is acting at the behest of Spain's enemies in matters of national security. Is it possible that this is more than just a feeling? Let's review the facts. In 2022, a European NGO pointed to Podemos and Izquierda Unida (both allies of Sánchez) as the Spanish parties that voted the most in favor of Russia in the European Parliament. Coincidentally, these two far-left parties have openly rejected any increase in defense investment. The coincidences do not end there: let us remember that three years ago these same parties did not condemn the Russian invasion of Ukraine and since its beginning have opposed the sending of Spanish military aid to the invaded country.

Sánchez's infamous favors to Russia

In parallel, the Sánchez government has done a series of favors to Russia that I already pointed out here, such as the purchase of large quantities of Russian gas (with which the government finances Russian aggressions against Ukraine) and the government's scandalous erasure of Russian interference in Spain during the 2017 separatist coup in Catalonia, a coup in which The Kremlin offered economic and even military aid to the coup plotters, who, coincidentally, are also among Sánchez's parliamentary allies today. All this while the Spanish government is one of the few allied cabinets that does not lift a finger to deactivate Russian propaganda networks in their country. Let us also note that while Sánchez slanders Israel (an attacked country) by accusing it of "genocide", he has not directed that accusation against Russia (an aggressor country) even once, despite the numerous atrocities perpetrated by the Russians in Ukraine.

Sánchez is being unmasked

While doing all this, Sánchez has sought to continue promoting himself among European leaders, perhaps thinking about his professional future once he loses power and intends to look for a new job, surely in an international organization. The Socialist leader has applied the strategy of pretending to be a reliable ally and simulating that he is committed to helping Ukraine, while failing to fulfill his commitments to NATO and his government is proportionally one of those that has sent the least military aid to the Ukrainians (0.063% of GDP, a ridiculous amount that is less than half of what Portugal contributes, which has provided 0.145%).

In the end, the truth always comes out. Many governments of allied countries have already had time to unmask the coalition government of socialists and communists that runs Spain, finding out Sánchez's true position: to please Putin's puppets that he has as allies, because what worries the socialist leader most, above all, is remaining in power at any price.
