I've loved Italian music for many years now, specifically from the 1950s and 1960s. It's a language I adore.
I once put a selection of Italian music from that era on my car's USB drive. There are many memorable songs in that selection. One of them is "Senza fine," a love song written and composed by Gino Paoli for Ornella Vanoni and released as a single in September 1961. Paoli was inspired by Vanoni (with whom he was in love at the time) to write this beautiful song, which begins with the sound of an accordion and unfolds to a waltz rhythm.
This was a song my father loved. It's no wonder, because he was a romantic: from the moment he met my mother, he was head over heels in love with her for the rest of his life. God called him home last summer, but I know that he keeps that love alive in heaven.
When this song was released, my father was 17 years old, so it was one of the songs of his youth. Whenever I hear this song, I think of my father, and I believe that if he liked it so much, it was because it perfectly represented his understanding of love: "endlessly." I dedicate it to my father and my mother. Today he would have turned 82. He can no longer hear it physically (my mother can), but I hope the notes reach him in heaven. Happy birthday, Dad.
Here are the original lyrics in Italian:
Senza fine,
tu trascini la nostra vita,
senza un attimo di respiro,
per sognare,
per potere ricordare,
ciò che abbiamo già vissuto.Senza fine,
tu sei un attimo senza fine.
Non hai ieri,
non hai domani,
tutto è ormai nelle tue mani,
mani grandi,
mani senza fine.Non m'importa della luna,
non m'importa delle stelle,
tu per me sei luna e stelle,
tu per me sei sole e cielo,
tu per me sei tutto quanto,
tutto quanto voglio avere.Senza fine,
tu sei un attimo senza fine,
non hai ieri,
non hai domani,
tutto è ormai nelle tue mani,
mani grandi,
mani senza fine.Non m'importa della luna,
non m'importa delle stelle,
tu per me sei luna e stelle,
tu per me sei sole e cielo,
tu per me sei tutto quanto,
tutto quanto voglio avere.Senza fine...
Here is the English translation:
Endlessly,
you drag our lives along,
without a moment's respite,
to dream,
to be able to remember,
what we've already experienced.Endlessly,
you are an endless moment. You have no yesterday,
no tomorrow,
everything is now in your hands,
big hands,
endlessly hands.I don't care about the moon,
I don't care about the stars,
you are the moon and stars to me,
you are the sun and the sky,
you are everything to me,
everything I want to have.Endlessly,
you are an endless moment,
you have no yesterday,
no tomorrow,
everything is now in your hands,
big hands,
endlessly hands.I don't care about the moon,
I don't care about the stars,
you are the moon and stars to me,
you are the sun and the sky,
you are everything to me,
everything I want to have.Endlessly...
