Vladimir Putin's dictatorship is launching systematic attacks against Ukraine's civilian population on a practically daily basis.
These attacks target residential buildings, hospitals, schools, places of worship, and other locations with no military value. These attacks constitute clear war crimes. However, many of these attacks have ceased to make headlines in most Western media outlets. Some European governments are showing themselves to be particularly indifferent regarding these crimes.
One example of this policy of indifference is that displayed by Pedro Sánchez’s Spanish government—a coalition of socialists and communists that theoretically supports Ukraine (as it has frequently stated) but includes among its ministers Sira Rego, a communist who, in 2022, was among the few Spanish Members of the European Parliament who did not condemn the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Its parliamentary allies over the last two legislative terms include Podemos, one of the most pro-Russian parties in Spain.
Sánchez accuses Israel of 'genocide' but not Russia
Last week, I explained here that, unlike his stance toward Israel, Pedro Sánchez has not once accused Putin or Russia of "genocide" while Spain continues to purchase large quantities of Russian gas, thereby helping the invading country sustain its war of aggression against the Ukrainian people. Furthermore, it was recently revealed that Sánchez's government will veto Ukraine's accession to the European Union unless it recognizes three Spanish regional languages as official (Catalan, Basque, and Galician)—languages that are not even official throughout all of Spain. This demand comes from Sánchez's separatist allies, including a party that maintained contacts with the Kremlin leading up to the 2017 separatist coup in Catalonia, for which Russia offered military and economic support. A betrayal that Sánchez hastened to leave unpunished with his amnesty law.
Not a single message from the MAEC condemning Russia in a year and a half....
This double standard on the part of Pedro Sánchez's government is also evident in its official statements. I reviewed messages posted on X (Twitter) by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAEC) containing the word "condena" (condemnation) over the past twelve months—the term typically used by this communication channel of the Sánchez administration to express its strongest possible rejection of any given event. The results of this search were highly revealing.
The MAEC's last message condemning Russia was published on February 24, 2025, marking the third anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. By the 2026 anniversary, the word "condemna" had disappeared, even as Spain was sharply increasing its purchases of Russian gas. It is particularly shocking to see from that account that, for over a year and a half, the Sánchez government has not issued a single condemnation of Russia via that channel, despite the constant attacks launched by Moscow against the Ukrainian civilian population.
... but 26 messages condemning Israel in the last 12 months
The situation changes radically when it comes to Israel, the only truly democratic state in the Middle East, which three years ago suffered the largest terrorist attack in its history and the greatest antisemitic massacre since the Holocaust. While the Spanish Foreign Ministry’s condemnations of Russia—a dictatorship carrying out an unprovoked invasion—faded away, the Sánchez government issued 26 condemnations of Israel via that same channel over the last 12 months. These messages of condemnation were published on the following dates (each message is linked to the corresponding date): 10-23-2025, 11-13-2025, 11-25-2025, 12-8-2025, 12-22-2025, 1-13-2026, 1-21-2026, 2-2-2026, 2-2-2026, 2-9-2026, 2-17-2026, 2-23-2026, 3-7-2026, 3-12-2026, 3-14-2026, 3-15-2026, 3-17-2026, 3-23-2026, 3-31-2026, 4-23-2026, 5-2-2026, 6-2-2026, 7-25-2026, 8-15-2026, 8-21-2026 and 8-26-2026.
As can be seen, there was a day when the MAEC issued two condemnations of Israel, and in one particular week, as many as three messages condemning that democratic country were published. In some cases, the condemnations were not even directed at military operations carried out by Israel against Palestinian terrorist groups—which was the norm: one of the condemnation messages concerned an assault on a Catholic nun. It is worth noting that Israeli police arrested the assailant, who was a mentally disturbed individual who has since been committed to a psychiatric institution. Coincidentally, a significant piece of data came to light yesterday: in 2025, there were 173 attacks against Catholics and 40 attacks against Jews in Spain. Sánchez's government issued no message of condemnation regarding any of them.
A bias indicating this government's antisemitism
It is difficult to fathom a government displaying such an obsession with a democratic country, issuing 26 condemnations against it in a single year (a number Sánchez has not directed at any other nation, including dictatorships like Iran, Communist China, or North Korea), while failing to issue a single statement condemning the hundreds of Russian attacks on civilians in Ukraine during that same period. This double standard can only be explained by the antisemitic bias the Sánchez government has been exhibiting for years.
