One of the fundamental principles of the conservative movement is that good and evil exist, and that this must be reflected in politics.
The current President of the United States seems to have forgotten that important principle. Yesterday, Donald Trump posted on Truth Social:
"I have just concluded a highly successful discussion with President Vladimir Putin, of Russia, wherein it was agreed that Russia will immediately supply over 300,000 Tons of Diesel Fuel to the American and Global Marketplace, another 500,000 Tons during the month of November, and 1,000,000 Tons immediately thereafter. Additionally, based on the condition of their Diesel Refineries, Russia will then deliver, within a short period of time, 3,000,000 Tons of Diesel Fuel."
Trump has justified that agreement with Putin by claiming the following:
"Diesel Prices for Americans and, indeed, the World, will be COMING DOWN, IN RECORD NUMBERS, AND FAST! Lower prices for Americans, especially our Great Farmers, Ranchers, and Truckers, is my Greatest Priority."
It is evident that Trump is making this decision with an eye on the midterms—the midterm elections for the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate. The move appears to be a way to win over the most pro-Russian faction of the MAGA movement, which supported Trump in the 2024 presidential election.
Trump announced this decision one day after recent massacres perpetrated by the Russians in Ukraine, in which dozens of civilians—including children—were killed. These massacres were carried out by a terrorist regime that has been committing all manner of war crimes in Ukraine. The deal with Trump serves as a major lifeline for Putin and will provide Russia with more funds to continue killing Ukrainians. It is truly lamentable to see the leading power of the free world rewarding one of the West's greatest enemies for perpetrating massacres in a European country. A country—Ukraine—that surrendered its nuclear weapons in 1994 in exchange for a commitment to respect its territorial integrity, signed by the United States (among others) as a guarantor of the agreement.
It is immoral for Trump to reward Putin’s dictatorship in this way for murdering Ukrainian civilians, thereby betraying a commitment made by the United States 32 years ago and, in practice, providing funds to the Kremlin to continue committing war crimes. This reflects the same immoral attitude shown by Pedro Sánchez in purchasing large quantities of Russian gas. What is difficult to understand is why some people criticize one purchase but not the other. Does the "who" matter more than the "what"?
Furthermore, it must be remembered that Russia helped the Iranian terrorist regime kill American soldiers by providing intelligence to Tehran for attacks on U.S. targets. All signs point to Trump and the MAGA movement caring little about the lives of Ukrainian civilians. Do they also care little about the lives of American soldiers who fell fighting against Tehran’s criminal regime? And if they believe that any means are justified in the attempt to lower oil prices—even buying it from a dictatorship as nefarious as Russia’s—why don’t they buy it from Iran as well? Buying oil from the terrorist regime in Moscow is just as open to criticism as buying it from the one in Tehran.
