An attempt is being made in Galicia to gag the region’s fourth most-voted party

Far-left violence in La Coruña aimed at preventing Vox from expressing itself freely

Today in La Coruña, the far left has once again displayed the intolerant and violent attitude that has become its hallmark.

This Wednesday, October 21, Vox invited the media to hear statements from its president, Santiago Abascal, who is a member of the Congress of Deputies. It is worth noting that Vox received over 34,000 votes in the 2024 Galician elections, becoming the fourth most-voted party in that region. Any legal political party has the right to express itself in a democracy, provided it does not resort to violence. Vox is a democratic party that advocates for its ideas through peaceful means—something that cannot be said of those who, today, attempted to prevent Abascal from expressing himself freely in that Spanish city.

Abascal’s visit to La Coruña was announced days in advance, and the far left began organizing another act of harassment against Vox, even recruiting ultra groups like the Riazor Blues—a group founded in 1987 with a long history of violence. They are a faction of the fan base of Real Club Deportivo de La Coruña. It is worth recalling that this ultra group was implicated in the October 2003 killing of Manuel Ríos Suárez, a supporter of the same football club. Following the public outcry over that crime, the Riazor Blues announced their dissolution, only to resurface later.

Despite those threats, Abascal went to the Plaza de María Pita, where he met with a large group of Vox supporters—people who gathered there undeterred by threats from the far left, amidst a heavy deployment of the National Police. During his press conference, Abascal explained the left’s particular interest in preventing Vox from expressing itself freely:

"Vox is contending for a parliamentary seat in the province of La Coruña —specifically against the left— and that is precisely what the various groups and fringe factions that gathered in this square today seek to prevent. They have come to the aid of Pedro Sánchez, his mafia, his corruption, and the wave of mass migration—all of which they are complicit in. My response to them is this: no form of coercion, violence, or attempt to silence us will ever succeed. We are not in the least bit intimidated by their presence; however, they should also know that with a change in government—following a massive public mobilization—it will no longer be possible to harass citizens or occupy public squares to prevent people from freely expressing themselves and listening to others in freedom."

Far-left thugs acted as they usually do. They hurled insults at the police—shouting "Murderous police!"—in an attempt to provoke the officers. When these provocations failed to have an effect, they moved on to assaulting the UIP officers, as can be seen in this video from the program "En boca de todos" on the channel Cuatro, which provided an excellent live broadcast of the incidents:

The attacks on the police escalated, and the UIP had to charge against the far-left extremists. Here, we can see how it was these extremists who initiated the disturbances:

Left-wing extremists stormed one of the restaurants in the square and began throwing its chairs at the police, as we can see in this other video, broadcast live by "En boca de todos":

Following the throwing of chairs came the throwing of stones at the police—an event also broadcast live by the program "En boca de todos," whose reporter in La Coruña had to take cover behind one of the police vans to avoid being struck by objects hurled by far-left extremists:

The far-left violence we have witnessed today in La Coruña is intolerable in a democratic country. The far left acts as if it has the right to decide who is permitted to express themselves and who is not—as though the rest of us required their permission to exercise our fundamental rights. Such mafia-like behavior must be condemned and rooted out of society; furthermore, any politicians or political parties that fail to condemn these actions are complicit with those who perpetrate such violence.
