The Russian invasion of Ukraine is not only costing the invaders many casualties, but has also already resulted in the death of a Russian general.
As reported by two Russian media, the newspaper Pravda and Lenta.ru, on Wednesday Ukrainian forces killed Major General Andrei Sukhovetsky, deputy commander of the 41st Combined Arms Army of the Russian Ground Forces. The news was confirmed on the Russian social network VKontakte by Sergey Chipilev, a colleague of the deceased.
Chipilev has hidden his profile on that network, but before that someone was able to make a copy of that entry on archive.ph, posted this morning at 10:25. It reads the following: "It is with great sorrow that we received the tragic news of the death of our friend, Major General Andrei Aleksandrovich Sukhovetsky, on the territory of Ukraine during a special operation. We express our deepest condolences to the family of Andrei Alexandrovich."
Pravda notes that Andrei Sukhovetsky graduated from the Ryazan Higher Airborne Command School in 1995: "As reported on the Ministry of Defense website, he began his career as a platoon commander and rose to chief of staff of the airborne assault unit of the Guard." According to the British newspaper Daily Mail, the Russian general would have been eliminated by a Ukrainian sniper.
This news is a serious blow to the morale of the Russian Army, which had as many dead in Ukraine in a single week as in Afghanistan in 4 months, and that is if we stick to the figure of 498 dead Russian soldiers published yesterday by the Ministry of Defense From Russia. The death of a Russian general in the first week of the invasion will be a spur to the Ukrainians, who are staging a stiff resistance against the invader.
