The most manufactured submachine gun in history: 6 million made in that war

An interesting analysis of the famous Soviet PPSh-41 submachine gun of the World War II

During the Winter War (1939-1940), the Finnish Army used an assault submachine gun against Soviet troops very effectively: the Suomi KP/-31.

The history of the Luger, the most famous pistol of World War II

After the severe setbacks suffered by the Red Army in its invasion of Finland, the USSR decided to make a new assault rifle that was easy to use and maintain and, moreover, that was simple enough to be able to manufacture it in large quantities. The USSR already had the PPD-40 submachine gun, and on that basis, in 1941 Gueorgui Shpaguin designed the PPSh-41, simply copying the Suomi KP/-31 magazine. This weapon had a stock of wood and a characteristic design with the barrel covered by a metal jacket with spaces for ventilation. The drum magazine had a capacity for 71 bullets, although another linear magazine with a capacity for 35 bullets was later made.

The ammunition used in this weapon was a pistol: the 7.62x25 Tokarev, although the Germans modified some captured specimens to be able to use their favorite ammunition, the 9 mm Parabellum. The PPSh-41 was manufactured in large numbers, producing 6 million copies during World War II, and continued to be manufactured in other countries of the Soviet orbit during the postwar period. These figures make it the most manufactured submachine gun in history. This weapon has been used in many wars over the last 80 years, and this submachine gun is currently being used in the Ukraine War.
