The number includes 521 tanks that have been captured by Ukrainian forces

Russia has already lost 1,500 tanks in Ukraine: these have been the most punished models

This Saturday the enormous figure of 1,500 Russian tanks lost in Ukraine was reached, five days before nine months after the start of the invasion.

Russia's tank losses in Ukraine: some data from 2021 to verify how serious they are
Ukraine vs Afghanistan: A comparison of Moscow's losses in both invasions

Of the 1,500 tanks lost by the Russians, 521 have been captured by Ukraine

The figure has been published by the independent website Oryxspioenkop.com, which has been documenting with images the military vehicles lost by each side in this war since February 24. Thus, it is not an estimate, but rather confirmed losses, but the real number of losses will be higher, since not all of them will be documented.

Of the 1,500 Russian tanks lost in the Ukraine, 859 have been destroyed, 64 have been damaged, 56 have been abandoned and 521 have been captured by the Ukrainians. This last figure makes Russia the largest supplier (involuntarily, yes) of tanks to the Ukrainian Army.

The most punished model, by far, is the T-72: 862

According to the data provided by Oryxspioenkop.com, these are the Russian tank models ordered by number of losses:

  • 862 T-72.
  • 339 T-80.
  • 53 T-62.
  • 46 T-64.
  • 31 T-90.

To this list we must add 169 tanks whose model could not be determined.

As we saw in October, at the beginning of the invasion Russia had between 2,609 and 2,849 tanks in its standing army, so those 1,500 tanks lost are more than half of his active armored fleet. That is why Russia has had to resort to obsolete T-62s from its warehouses.

Russian losses in 9 months multiply by 10 those suffered by the USSR and Afghanistan

Let us also remember that the Soviets lost 147 tanks in their 10-year invasion of Afghanistan (1979-1989), a war that ended in defeat for the invaders. Current Russian losses in Ukraine in just 9 months are already 10 times those Soviet losses.

Ukrainian tank losses

On the other hand, Oryxspioenkop.com also has been publishing Ukrainian losses, which include 370 tanks, of which 213 have been destroyed, 16 have been damaged, 13 have been abandoned and 129 have been captured by the Russians or by the pro-Russian militias from Donbass. Note that the number of Russian tanks captured by Ukraine far exceeds the Ukrainian tank losses.
