Today Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI passed away, a friend of Spain. As a Roman pontiff, he visited our country three times.
On his second journey to Spain, on November 6 and 7, 2010, Benedict XVI visited Santiago de Compostela for the Compostela Holy Year. There, on November 6, he officiated a solemn Mass in the Obradoiro Square.
At the end of the Mass, the music unit and the choir of students from the Escuela Naval Militar de Marín, the officers' academy of the Spanish Navy, sang the "Salve Marinera", the hymn to the Virgin of Carmel, the patron saint of sailors. The interpretation of this beautiful hymn, a work of the Spanish composer Cristóbal Oudrid y Segura (1825-1877), was carried out from the steps of the Cathedral of Santiago. This video shows that endearing moment:
May this "Salve Marinera" serve as a grateful memory and show of affection from Spain to Benedict XVI, a Pope who showed great appreciation for our Homeland.
Rest in peace.
