NATO Allied Air Command (AIRCOM) has organised a major air exercise in Greece, called Ramstein Flag 24.
This exercise has brought together more than 130 aircraft from 13 NATO countries, including Spain, which has contributed several Eurofighters from the 11th Wing of the Air Force, based in Morón, to this exercise. This multinational exercise has had as its center of operations the Andravida Air Base, in Greece. During this exercise, a spectacular formation of fighter planes from several countries has been seen, which appears in this video published today by AIRCOM:
NATO has posted a series of photos of the fighter formation on its Flickr account. You can see a selection of them below.
Planes forming next to the Rio-Antirio bridge, Greece.
The formation consisted of 12 aircraft: 10 fighter aircraft, a Greek Air Force Alenia C-27J Spartan transport aircraft with photographers on its rear ramp, and one other aircraft not shown in the photos. This photo was taken from the latter aircraft.
Seven of the formation's fighter jets. Above, from left to right, are a French Rafale, a Greek F-16 and a USAF F-35A. Below, from left to right, are a Hungarian Saab Gripen, a Polish F-16, a Greek Rafale and a Portuguese F-16.
Ten of the fighter planes in this formation. In addition to those we saw in the previous photo, above on the left we see a Swedish Gripen, and on the right we see an Italian Eurofighter (top) and a Spanish Eurofighter (bottom).
One of the Spanish Eurofighters that participated in this exercise, specifically the C.16-33 (11-33).
The Spanish Eurofighter that participated in the formation flight, the C.16-46 (11-46).
Another image of the Spanish Eurofighter C.16-46. In this image, the large size of the HUD of this aircraft is striking.
A Polish F-16 and a Hungarian Gripen. The F-16 carries AIM-120 AMRAAM medium-range air-to-air missiles on its wing mounts.
A USAF F-35A. In front of its tail fins you can see two small Luneburg lenses, radar reflectors used to give these stealth aircraft a stronger radar signature during an exercise.
A heavily armed Greek F-16. It carried AMRAAM medium-range air-to-air missiles on its marginal mounts, AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles on its external underwing mounts, and AGM-88 HARM anti-radar missiles on its internal mounts.
A Saab Gripen of the Swedish Air Force. Sweden's recent integration into NATO has led to the country's military aircraft actively participating in NATO exercises.
A Portuguese F-16 with spectacular wing decoration. An AN/AAQ-28 Litening target designator can be seen on the rig near the air intake, an AN/ALQ-131 electronic countermeasures pod on the port ventral rig, and an AIM-9 Sidewinder short-range air-to-air missile can be seen on the marginal rig on its port wing.
A French Rafale. France, Croatia and Greece are the only operators of this type of fighter within NATO.
