As you know, I am Spanish and I am a very critical person of the Spanish political class, but that does not lead me to throw rubbish at my Nation.
In April I told you a few words that represent the spirit of this blog over the years: Spain is a great Nation, and for it and for the cause of Freedom it is always worth fighting and making great sacrifices, even if we do not see the results.
The habit of some Spaniards to speak badly of their Nation
For some time now, the custom of speaking ill of Spain has been spreading among some Spaniards. Obviously, I am not referring to criticizing what our leaders say and do, or even to recognizing possible errors that Spain has made in the past or is making in the present. Loving your country is like loving a mother. You know that she is not a perfect person, you know that she makes mistakes - as we all do - but she is the woman who brought you into the world and who has made many sacrifices for you, and for that alone she deserves your gratitude and your pride as a son.
Spain is not just a country of 47 million inhabitants, many of whom get up every day to make all kinds of sacrifices for their loved ones and also to leave a better country for their children. Spain is not just a large territory, whose people remain united despite the numerous efforts of some petty people to divide us and set us against each other. Spain is not just a common language and culture, which connect us with millions of people from the former Spanish America.
Spain is also the legacy of many generations of Spaniards who worked and fought to make a better country, to keep our country united and to confront those who tried to subjugate it by force. Spain is a precious heritage that we have the obligation to preserve and enrich in order to pass it on to the Spaniards who will come after us. That is why I have no doubts when I say that Spain is a great Nation.
The intentions of some people who are dedicated to speaking badly of Spain
I have long made it my policy not to publish anything that serves to demotivate my fellow countrymen. It is a right and a duty to criticize bad rulers, and that criticism is, in fact, an exercise in patriotism and I will continue to do so as long as I have blood in my veins. What I think we already have in abundance are people dedicated to speaking badly of Spain and demotivating the Spaniards who still feel proud of our country.
In some cases, the intentions of these demotivators are obvious. I am referring, for example, to those who carry hatred of Spain as their banner, those who wish to see our nation broken and divided. We also have the case of those who hate Spain because it is one of the great nations of the West, and particularly because it is a nation that has come to represent everything that the enemies of Christianity hate.
The case of the 'patriots' admirers of Russia
What is new, for some time now, is reading messages from "patriots" who speak badly of Spain. Two years ago I mentioned here the case of Juan Manuel de Prada, who placed Spain in a category that he describes as "European colonies", in an article in Abc that was pure propaganda against the United States in relation to the war in Ukraine. Three years earlier, the same author stated that "Catalonia is a nation like a cathedral", largely assuming the separatist discourse and stating things like "international powers" (he did not say which ones) "do not want Catalonia to be independent", and adding that "what Felipe V and then the liberal State did was punish Catalonia, suffocate it, brutally ignoring its specificity."
Today, José Javier Esparza states in La Gaceta: "No, Spain is not a great nation." The article mixes legitimate criticism of politicians with demotivating messages like this one: "Spain has spent more than half a century busily dedicated to the task of throwing tons of dirt (and garbage) on the national idea." That is, the author complains that "Spain" throws garbage on the "national idea" in an article directed at that very thing from its title. A contradiction that would be funny if we were not faced with yet another attempt to discredit Spain.
A clear case of pro-Russian narrative
Esparza cites as one of his arguments that "our armies are subject to whatever the Americans say." A statement that fits into the author's pro-Russian narrative. Two weeks ago, in another article in La Gaceta, Esparza elaborated on the typical arguments of pro-Russian propagandists, stating that "it was reckless to extend NATO endlessly to the east" (rather, it was reckless not to allow Ukraine to join NATO, a decision by Germany and France that gave Putin the green light to invade that country) and questioning "support for Ukraine and harassment of Russia" (Russia has had troops in Moldova since 1994, invaded Georgia in 2008, Crimea in 2014 and the rest of Ukraine in 2022, but the harassed one is poor Russia). Russia is being harassed), and ends by accusing the West of "irresponsible rhetoric of childish warmongering", as if the West, and not Russia, were to blame for the war in Ukraine.
Coincidentally, seven years ago, in another article in La Gaceta, Esparza mocked Russian interference in the 2017 separatist coup in Catalonia, stating that this Russian plot, already amply proven by the Civil Guard, "is something like the progressive and globalist version of the old Judeo-Masonic conspiracy." But at the same time that downplaying this Russian interference, Esparza was understanding with the Kremlin: "Russia, naturally, plays its cards in this as in other matters: nothing strange in a country that sees us as enemies for the very understandable reason that there are Spanish tanks on its borders."
What would pro-Russians say if Spain were attacked by Russia?
For my part, I stand by what I have been saying: yes, Spain is a great Nation, even if the separatists deny it, even if the extreme left denies it, and even if now we also have the "patriots" admirers of Russia trying to discourage us. By the way, I don't want to imagine what Russia's admirers would say - who are now asking Ukraine to surrender and give up part of its territory, claiming that it cannot win this war - if Spain were that suffered a Russian aggression. It is not difficult to imagine what they would say, taking into account that we have smaller armed forces than Ukraine's and reading the messages from those admirers of Russia asking us to turn our backs on Spain's allied countries that could support us in such a situation.
