The beret has become a standard item of clothing for many armies, and is also worn by the various units of the Spanish Army.

In addition to their color, berets are used to distinguish the different units of the Army also by their insignia. There are units that have specific colors for these headgear. In those units that do not have berets of a specific color, Order DEF/1756/2016 establishes the use of khaki berets.

Until now, the General Basic Academy of Non-Commissioned Officers (AGBS) in Talarn (Lleida) has been using khaki berets with the Spanish Army crest, a type of beret used by various units that lack a specific garment. These khaki berets coexisted with the specific garments of the units from which many students came.

This Saturday, October 19, the AGBS held a flag-swearing ceremony for the students admitted this year, specifically the students of the L and LII Promotion of the Non-Commissioned Officer Scale of the Army. The ceremony was chaired by the Chief of the Army Staff (JEME) , Army General Amador Enseñat y Berea.

This event, attended by 578 students, had a very special meaning today as this year marks the 50th anniversary of the creation of the Basic Scale of Non-Commissioned Officers and the AGBS. A good opportunity to give a touch of distinction to this institution that trains non-commissioned officers of the Army.

At this event, AGBS students and other personnel have worn the Academy's new beret. The beret is khaki, like the standard clothing worn by units without a specific beret colour, and includes the AGBS emblem: the face of Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom, and the Cross of Santiago, one of the oldest Spanish military emblems, which also appears on the Spanish Army's insignia.

As we can see in these photos released by the Training and Doctrine Command (MADOC), the insignia is metallic, with the head of Minerva in gold and the Cross of Santiago enameled in red.
