Against the criticism of Steve Bannon and his supporters from Spain

With Giorgia Meloni and the defense of the Ukrainian cause against Russian aggression

I think I've said before that I'm very predictable. Some might even say that I'm boringly predictable.

An example to emulate: Giorgia Meloni's firm statement on the Russian invasion of Ukraine
Ukraine and an inspiring great map of Middle Earth at a meeting of Meloni and Morawiecki

For two years now I have been praising the current Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni for her support for Ukraine. A support that has always been very clear and beyond any doubt, as has been the support shown by other parties in her group in the European Parliament, that of the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR).

To this day, Meloni still maintains that support, for the simple reason that Russian aggression against Ukraine continues. It is further proof that the Italian Prime Minister is a person of principle, something I have always admired in anyone involved in politics.

This week, Steve Bannon, a former adviser to Trump and head of a movement called Make America Great Again (MAGA, the slogan used by Trump in his first campaign for the presidency), gave an interview to the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera in which he attacks Meloni with these words: "She was one of the greatest defenders of the continuation of the war in Ukraine".

Bannon's words are blatantly false, since the war in Ukraine continues because Putin wants it to. Meloni supports Ukraine in its legitimate defense against an invasion, even if Russia's sycophants manipulate this in an attempt to whitewash the Russian invaders.

Bannon adds: "We in the Maga movement are adamant: we want to cut funding for Ukraine in the House by 100 percent." Putin will surely be very happy to see the favor that Bannon is doing him. Once again, an isolationist movement in the US is favoring a criminal tyrant in Europe, just as it was at the beginning of World War II. It is sad to see that there are people who forget history and insist on stumbling over the same stone again.

Of course, I'm not too worried about what Bannon says. I am worried when I read certain things in Spain, such as an article published today which states the following: "the great act of contrition that is to come is for Meloni to regret his commitment to Zelensky and his staying in the ECR."

The Royal Spanish Academy defines "contrition" in two ways: 1. "Repentance for a fault committed." 2. "In Catholicism, pain for having offended God, for the love one has for him." Meloni does not have to repent of his support for Ukraine in the face of the Russian invasion. That support is certainly not an offense to God. On the contrary. The offense is supporting or favoring the criminal dictator who started that invasion.

In any case, if some continue down this path, I will be the one who will regret the vote I cast in the last European elections. A vote in which I expressed my trust in a party that belonged to the ECR and that supported the cause of Ukraine. The first has already changed and in the second I am beginning to read things that I like less and less, like that article published today.

I repeat: I am very predictable. I continue to defend the same thing I defended the day Russia invaded Ukraine. If others have decided to change their position on this issue, that is their problem, but they should not complain afterwards if they lose support for changing their discourse on a matter of principle such as defending the cause of Ukraine against the Russian invasion.
