The town of Nigrán, on the southern shore of the Vigo Estuary, is one of my favourite areas of Galicia since my earliest childhood.
Nigrán is known for its fine sandy beaches. The most famous ones are Patos beach, Playa América and Panjón, which is my favorite. In addition, from the Monteferro peninsula you can enjoy magnificent views, as well as visit the "Faro de los Muertos" (that is, the Monument to the Universal Navy) and the guns of Battery J-3.
Hidden on the south side of the isthmus of the Monteferro peninsula there is a very nice beach that is not as well known as the ones I have mentioned. I took these photos there on December 7th.
This small beach is called Area Fofa (i.e. soft sand). It is in the parish of Panjón, next to Madorra beach.
Fofa Area measures about 134 meters if we only count the sand, although there is a reef area next to it that extends 97 meters further. It is an ideal place to see the sunsets in winter, when the sun sets further south than in summer.
From this beach there are good views of the small peninsula that separates the beaches of Panjón and Madorra, looking southeast.
On the eastern side of the beach there is a private property that has access to the beach via stone stairs.
From Area Fofa you can clearly see the Cabezo de San Juan beacon, located 1.25 kilometres away, in the middle of Bayona Bay.
In summer there are quite a few people on this beach, but in winter, as you can see, it is not very crowded. The day I took the photos was cold and the only user of this beach was this seagull that seemed to be thinking about the meaning of life while looking at the landscape.
