Syria has gone from being ruled by a criminal regime, Bashar al-Assad, to being in the hands of another gang of criminals.
These In the last few hours, social media has been filled with horrifying videos of the atrocities perpetrated by the jihadists of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, the jihadist group that seized power in that country three months ago by putting Hassan Abdel Ghani in power, a former member of the Islamist terrorist group Al Qaeda. In the images that have been spread through social networks, whole families are seen massacred: men, women and children murdered in horrendous crimes that have already claimed hundreds of victims in recent hours.
The news about the religion of the victims is somewhat confusing at the moment. AsiaNews.it, a Catholic news agency of the Pontifical Institute for Foreign Missions, speaks of "hundreds of Alawite dead", a branch of Islam in which Assad had many supporters (the jihadists of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham belong to the different branch of Islam, Sunnism). In turn, Newsweek, citing as a source the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR, an NGO based in the United Kingdom), speaks of more than 1,000 dead, including Christians and Alawites.
In light of the images we are seeing, what the jihadist terrorists of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham are perpetrating in Syria deserves to be classified as genocide, in accordance with what the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court states in its Article 6, which defines this crime as "any of the following acts, committed with the intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group as such", including among the acts mentioned the killing of the members of the group.
The most curious thing about the scant reactions that these massacres are generating in the West is the silence of those who falsely accused Israel of "genocide" in Gaza for its counteroffensive against Hamas terrorists after the attack perpetrated by that Islamist criminal group against the Jewish State on October 7, 2023, perpetrating the greatest massacre suffered by the Jewish people since the Holocaust. A massacre that was overshadowed by these false accusations launched precisely against the attacked country. When it is Islamist criminals who commit a massacre, the anti-Semitic left remains silent, after having miserably slandered an entire country for defending itself from the greatest terrorist attack in its history.
It should be noted that Israel deployed its forces in Syria after the jihadists attacked Damascus to protect the Druze minority in the southwest of the country (remember that many members of this religious community live in Israel and serve in its army). Furthermore, Israel destroyed a large part of the Syrian Army's arsenals, including its chemical weapons and long-range missile stores, to prevent all these weapons from falling into the hands of the jihadists of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham. If Israel had not done that, we would probably now be talking about a much larger massacre in Syria.
