I always dedicate this section of my blog to talking about interesting places and topics related to geography and space.
Today, unfortunately, I have to make an exception, and I do so to defend the work of a good friend, the author of the excellent YouTube channel Aventuras Entresierras, to which I always recommend you subscribe for the interesting videos he publishes about exploring abandoned places. On September 12, 2022, Aventuras Entresierras published a video about El Arteal, a ghost town in the municipality of Cuevas del Almanzora, in the province of Almería, which is used by the Legion to carry out military exercises:
That same day I published an entry showing that video, citing its source and showing some screenshots. Apparently, some media outlets found this an interesting topic, because today Aventuras Entresierras posted a complaint on its Facebook page and on its Twitter account stating the following:
It's incredible how digital media use other people's material without any authorization. On the left are the AUTHORIZED screenshots of my video for the Contando Estrelas portal, on the right are the UNAUTHORIZED copies from El Español and MARCA (once the most widely read newspaper in Spain).
Here you can see the screenshots published by Aventuras Entresierras showing this section of the Spanish edition of Contando Estrelas on the left, and on the right the publications by Marca (above) and El Español (below), with images taken from the Aventuras Entresierras video, without those two newspapers citing the source. Of course, they also don't link to the video in which that image appeared.
The news from the Marca newspaper can be seen here (and here an automatic copy, in case they change or delete it now) and here News from El Español (here is the automatic copy).
In the case of Marca, the data collected in its news are the ones I published here in 2022, changing phrases and words in order so that the copy is not so conspicuous. As for El Español, this newspaper shows two screenshots that I took from the aforementioned Aventuras Entresierras video, indicating "Archivo Municipal de Cuevas del Almanzora" as the source. I don't know if those images appear in that municipal archive, but what is clear to me is that they appeared for the first time in the Aventuras Entresierras video and I took those screenshots with my computer.
Please note that this is a free, non-profit blog, and I always provide the source of the videos and images I publish (unless I am unable to locate it after much searching).
However, Marca and El Español are commercial newspapers, meaning they are for-profit. They are using other people's content without citing the source and, furthermore, profiting from it. Unfortunately, this isn't the first time something like this has happened to a media outlet. I already explained here in 2017 what happened with a photo I took in 2014, which some media outlets appropriated without citing the source and even claiming responsibility for it (as Cadena SER did). Afterwards, they'll still wonder why traditional journalism is in crisis...
