Is one insult more reprehensible than hundreds of murders? The question is grotesque, but some seem to answer affirmatively.
Yesterday, MP María Mercedes Aizpurúa, spokesperson for EH Bildu in Congress, wrote a message on Twitter about something that happened to her three years ago in the Lower House of the Cortes Generales: "They called me a 'son of a bitch' in the Press Room". Aizpuría added: "The measures to end the harassment and insults of the ultras and ensure the work of journalists cannot wait any longer."
We must remember that EH Bildu has never condemned the crimes committed by the terrorist group, which include the murder of 853 people (including 22 children), more than 2,600 injured and maimed, almost 90 kidnapped, and thousands extorted. In April, a Bildu mayor authorized a tribute to two ETA terrorists at a school named after a victim of those criminals. It should also be remembered that EH Bildu refers to these terrorists as "political prisoners", as if murders, mutilations, kidnappings and extortions were a form of politics.
These are the same people who now complain about the insults against them and demand action against those who insult them, while EH Bildu continues to fail to condemn ETA's crimes, not even those perpetrated against children and babies. It's the height of cynicism.
Once again, I insist: EH Bildu should be an illegal party. In a democracy, there should be no room for those who pay homage to terrorists and refuse to condemn their crimes. Let us also remember that Aizpurúa was convicted in 1984 for glorification of terrorism, a crime for which she has never apologized. The real insult is that EH Bildu is allowed to stand in elections and enter democratic institutions. It is an insult to Spain, to democracy, and, above all, to the thousands of victims of the terrorist group ETA.
