Massacre of Druze in Sweida: anti-Semites mute in the face of a new Islamist crime

For several days now, Druze have begun to replace Christians and Yazidis as targets of Islamist crimes.

Hundreds of Druze have been killed in Sweida, southern Syria

The massacre took place in Sweida, in southern Syria, a city with a Druze majority that has been attacked by Islamist forces of the new Syrian government of Hassan Abdel Ghani, leader of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham and former member of the Islamist terrorist group al-Qaeda. The morgue in that city has filled with more than 400 bodies, after the Islamists dedicated themselves to murdering members of the Druze community in cold blood. Let us remember that a few months ago Alawites and Christians already suffered something similar in southern Syria.

Only Israel has come to the aid of the Druze community

Faced with the rest of the world's indifference, Israel has been the only country to come to the defense of Syria's Druze. It should be remembered that 150,000 Druze live in northern Israel, a religious minority that is very well integrated into the country. Many of them serve in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). When the Assad dictatorship fell, Israel deployed to southern Syria to protect the Druze community, a deployment that was criticized by some countries and international organizations but which has now been shown to have been justified.

António Guterres (UN) condemns Israel but not the Syrian Islamist government

As has happened before, UN Secretary General António Guterres, a socialist, condemned the Israeli intervention to protect the Druze, without addressing a single criticism to the Islamist government of Hassan Abdel Ghani, the perpetrator of the massacre. These statements can only be explained by the growing affinity of the Western left with Islamism and the increasing influence that Islamic regimes, many of them openly anti-democratic, have within that international organization: two years ago, Iran was elected to a vice-presidency of its General Assembly.

Once again, the UN has demonstrated not only its utter uselessness in protecting human rights, but also its complicity with certain regimes and criminal groups. Let us recall, without going any further, Guterres' obsequious attitude towards dictators Putin and Lukashenko in October 2024, when the UN Secretary General traveled to Russia in the midst of Russian aggression against Ukraine, and the use of UN compounds in Gaza by Hamas terrorists to hold Israeli hostages that were kidnapped during the October 7, 2023 terrorist attack against Israel.

Regarding international reactions to the massacre of the Druze in Syria, British journalist Melanie Phillips has written:

"The attacks on the Druze were barbaric. There were reportedly beheadings and rapes; children were murdered in front of their parents. The troops publicly humiliated their male victims by shaving off their beards, which are religiously significant to them, in a chilling echo of what the Nazis did to the Jews of Germany. Yet this slaughter elicited no condemnation from those who, day in and day out, signal their own supposed virtue by falsely accusing Israel of war crimes. Faced with the evidence of a horrific attempt to exterminate the Druze, demonstrators who have been screaming about Israel’s “genocide” for the past 21 months were conspicuously absent from the streets and campuses."

Phillips has criticized organizations such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch for remaining silent on the massacre, adding: "Al-Julani’s troops reportedly slaughtered the entire staff at Suweida’s hospital along with their patients. Yet from those who falsely accuse Israel of targeting hospitals in Gaza in order to kill patients and staff—and who wickedly ignore the fact that Hamas has turned them into terrorist hubs and thus made them into legitimate military targets—there was only silence."

The confluence of different ideologies in the current anti-Semitic wave

International pressure directed against Israel for its operation in Gaza to rescue hostages held by Hamas has now turned into absolute silence toward the new Syrian Islamist government following this massacre. Phillips notes: "Various media outlets reported these atrocities as “tit for tat” skirmishes between the Druze and Bedouin tribes. Even the Trump administration bafflingly described what happened as a “misunderstanding” between Israel and Syria that had somehow gotten out of hand. The perversity of all this reaction was hardly surprising. Much of it was wrapped up in a deep animus against Israel and the Jewish people, which is its own dark and terrifying story."

This double standard is nothing new on the Western left, which has been exhibiting growing anti-Semitism for many years, especially in its most extremist sectors. Neo-fascist and neo-Nazi groups have also long displayed their hatred of Israel, which can be explained simply by the fact that it is a Jewish state, largely made up of Holocaust survivors and their descendants. The big news now is in a considerable part of the American conservative right, specifically the MAGA movement close to Trump, which is increasingly slipping into anti-Semitic positions, and this translates into pressure on the White House, whose current leader had been openly showing himself to be a staunch supporter of Israel.

Between them all, they have managed to make the massacre of Druze in Syria go unnoticed and, finally, once again, Israel is presented as the bad guy for intervening in Syria to stop a new wave of crimes perpetrated by Islamic extremism, which is the great beneficiary of anti-Semitism on the left, neo-fascism and part of the right, for whom crimes against human rights seem to lose all relevance if they do not find some direct or indirect way to blame the Jews.
