Scandal at the UN: Iran is elected for a vice-presidency of its General Assembly

The United Nations (UN) has decided to choose the path of discredit with a new scandal in its General Assembly.

UN Watch and the United States denounce the scandalous election

Hillel Neuer, executive director of the NGO UN Watch, yesterday denounced the following: "The Islamic Republic of Iran was just elected Vice-President of the U.N. General Assembly, for a one year term starting September 5. This is a regime that defies U.N. arms embargoes, tramples the human rights of its own citizens, and foments terrorism across the globe."

Chris Lu, United States Representative for United Nations Management and Reform, announced yesterday that his country is disengaging of that election and referred to Iran in these terms: "It is a country that has repeatedly demonstrated a clear lack of respect for the UN Charter and the authorities of various UN bodies. Iran cannot act as an honest broker in its role as a Vice President of the General Assembly, because it has shown, time and time again, that it does not seek to enhance global peace and security, but rather works against it. The United States stands opposed to holding Iran in this position, and we will continue to oppose Iran’s leadership throughout the UN system."

Iran has killed more than 500 protesters, including 71 children

This shocking news comes in the midst of a wave of repression by the Iranian dictatorship against the people who participated in the protests for the death of Mahsa Amini after being arrested and tortured by the "Morality Police" in Iran, for not wearing the Islamic headscarf "correctly". Last week, the Center for Human Rights in Iran (CHRI) denounced the murder of more than 500 protesters, including 71 children, at the hands of the security forces of the Iranian dictatorship, and the arrest of 22,000 people, including cases of torture and rape against detainees, including children.

An Islamist regime that promotes terrorism on an international scale

In terms of fomenting terrorism, this week the United States has imposed sanctions against Iranian leaders involved in plots against US citizens and Iranian dissidents residing in the US and abroad. Let us remember that Iran has spent decades promoting terrorism on an international scale, supporting and financing Islamist terrorist groups such as Hezbollah in Lebanon , Al Sabirin and Hamas in Gaza, Islamic Jihad in Palestine and Islamist terrorists in Bahrain.

In addition to supporting these criminal groups with arms and money, Iran has also dedicated itself to instigating crimes outside its borders. Last year writer Salman Rushdie was stabbed to death in the US, after Iran offered a $3 million reward to whoever assassinated him, a clear incitement to murder that the Islamist dictatorship reiterated just days before the Rusdie stabbing.

The contradictions and the growing discredit of the UN

The election of Iran for a vice-presidency of the General Assembly accentuates the contradictions and the discredit of the UN, an organization that claims to promote democracy and human rights, but within which it carries great weight a totalitarian regime, the Chinese communist dictatorship. The UN itself has dedicated itself to praising another communist dictatorship, Cuba, and refused to condemn the terrorist group Hamas, implicated in constant murders of Jews in Israel. It has also been the subject of controversy the presence in its Human Rights Council of countries that persecute Christians and that punish homosexuality with the death penalty.

Since last year, the role of the UN has been made evident by the presence in its Security Council, and with the right of veto, of the Russian Federation, a dictatorship that is carrying out an aggression brutal against another country, Ukraine, committing crimes against humanity and war crimes. It is incongruous that an organization created to defend human rights admits regimes that violate them, that promote terrorism, that commit crimes of genocide against humanity and that are a threat to peace.
